Eureka Mignon Zero Review: A Single Dose Dream!

Hi! My name is Arne. Having spent years working as a barista I'm now on a mission to bring more good coffee to the people. To that end, my team and I provide you with a broad knowledge base on the subject of coffee.

Our review process | Our team

I've been meaning to write a Eureka Mignon Zero review for quite some time. However, this awesome espresso grinder has been out of stock on both Seattle Coffee Gear and Amazon for the last few months.

I’ve been meaning to write a Eureka Mignon Zero review for quite some time. However, this awesome espresso grinder has been out of stock on both Seattle Coffee Gear and Amazon for the last few months.

Fortunately, the Eureka Mignon Zero is currently available for purchase so I plan on buying one to test out for you. In the meantime, I’ve decided to write an initial review. After all, there has to be a good reason why the Mignon Zero is selling like hot cakes!

Superb single dose grinder

Stepless grind adjustment

Not suitable for all brew methods

Overview: Eureka Mignon Zero Review

Regular Coffeeness readers will know how much I love Eureka grinders. In fact, the Eureka Mignon Zero took the top spot in my guide to the best single dose coffee grinders.

The manufacturer has been producing its high-quality products for over a hundred years, and all grinders are still made by hand in Florence, Italy. What’s more, you can pick up the Eureka Mignon Zero for an entirely reasonable $N/A.

Sure, that’s still a chunk of change, but those who are serious about espresso preparation will see it as incredibly good value for money.

Before I go any further, I should point out that the Eureka Mignon Zero is a great alternative to the much-hyped Niche Zero grinder, which is rather hard to obtain in the U.S.

So, what’s great about the Eureka Mignon Zero? Well, it offers all the classic Eureka features, including a stepless micrometric grind adjustment system and durable stainless steel flat burrs. What’s more, this versatile grinder is extremely quiet and efficient.

I’ll get into the details later in this Eureka Mignon Zero review, suffice to say home baristas are going to be drooling over the grinder’s capabilities. In short, there are a great many reasons why the Mignon Zero has created such a buzz in the specialty coffee world – it really is that good.

Eureka Mignon Zero Features

There’s lots to discuss in this Eureka Mignon Zero review. So, let’s take a deep dive into the features that set this single dose grinder apart.

Size and Design

Eureka Mignon Zero Size and Design

I’m a sucker for sleek, minimalist design, so the Eureka Mignon Zero is right up my alley. It has the classic boxy silhouette I’ve come to expect from Eureka grinders, as well as a super-sturdy aluminum frame and housing.

In my opinion, this coffee grinder is going to look pretty darn impressive sitting next to your home espresso machine. And if you want it to pop, there are a variety of colors available.

Incidentally, the Mignon Zero comes with an adjustable rubberized fork for grinding directly into a portafilter. Plus, you’ll get a slick metal dosing cup featuring the Eureka crest. This is great for both dosing a portafilter and grinding for other coffee brewing methods.

User Interface

Some of the manufacturer’s grinders are pretty high-tech. Take the Eureka Mignon Specialita for example, with its digital timer and touchscreen controls. However, the Mignon Zero keeps things very straightforward indeed.

The user interface comprises an “Extra Comfort” dial for adjusting the grind and a basic on/off switch. To be honest, I’m glad to see that Eureka hasn’t bothered with a timer function. After all, it’s always better to grind by weight. Anyway, seeing as this is meant as a single dose grinder, a timer function would have been irrelevant.

Stainless Steel Flat Burrs

The Eureka Mignon Zero is equipped with a set of burly 55mm flat burrs. Made of hardened stainless steel, these babies are going to last for a very long time. What’s more, they rotate at a whopping 1650 rpm, thanks to the powerful 320 watt motor.

From what I can gather, the Mignon Zero is capable of grinding at around 1.5 grams per second for espresso. That’s really fast! Oh, and these burrs supposedly produce an extremely uniform particle size across the grind size spectrum.

Stepless Grind Adjustments

As with other Eureka grinders, the Mignon Zero has a wonderful grind adjustment system. Rather than turning a collar under the bean hopper, there’s a dial located next to the hopper. Best of all, the Eureka Mignon Zero offers an infinite number of grind settings, thanks to the manufacturer’s flagship Stepless Micrometric Regulation System.

As you might have guessed, this makes the Mignon Zero absolutely ideal for espresso preparation, seeing as you can make tiny grind changes as you’re dialing in your shots. With that said, you are going to struggle to find your ideal setting again if you plan on using the grinder for other preparation methods.

Silent Technology

From what I can gather, the Eureka Mignon Zero is one of the quietest espresso grinders on the market. The manufacturer achieves this by mounting the entire grinder assembly to the frame using special rubber gaskets.

Of course, I won’t know how quiet this baby is until I’ve tested it out. However, I’d expect it to register around 70 decibels during operation.

ACE System

Given the Mignon Zero’s name, I’m sure you will have realized that the grinder’s biggest selling point is its very low grounds retention levels. Of course, this is the aim with all single dose grinders – to produce as close to the same weight from the grounds chute as what you put in at the top.

Thanks to Eureka’s innovative Anti-Clump and Electrostatic (ACE) system, the Mignon Zero is remarkably efficient. What’s more, you should experience uniform and fluffy grounds with no static or pebbles.

From everything I’ve heard, you shouldn’t experience more than about 0.2 grams of loss between the hopper and the Eureka Mignon Zero’s grounds chute. Now that is impressive!

Bean Hopper and Dosing Cup

The Eureka Mignon Zero comes with a 45-gram bean hopper with an additional blow-up bellows system. Best of all, the hopper has a vented shutter and a clear plastic lid. So, once you see your coffee beans have passed into the burr chamber, you can close the shutter to prevent popcorning.

As I mentioned earlier, you’ll also get a nice dosing cup with the Mignon Zero. So, if you’d rather not grind directly into your portafilter, you can simply use the cup, place your portafilter on top, then flip the whole thing to dose your filter basket.

How to Use the Eureka Mignon Zero

Honestly, using the Eureka Mignon Zero is a piece of cake. Assuming you’re going to be making espresso, I’ll give you a quick tutorial.

For starters, make sure to rinse the bean hopper before using it for the first time. That’ll get rid of any factory dust and plastic smell. Once it’s completely dry, reattach to the grinder, making sure the vented shutter is closed.

Next, weigh out your espresso beans using a coffee scale, before loading ’em into the hopper. Attach the blow up bellows then press the on/off switch to start the grinder. Oh, and make sure your portafilter or dosing cup is attached to the forks.

Open the shutter, keeping an eye on the coffee beans as they pass into the burr chamber. Once they’re all in there, close the shutter once more.

Finally, press down on the bellows a couple of times once all the coffee has exited the grounds chute. This will help push any stray grounds through the grinder.

Eureka Mignon Zero Cleaning

Thanks to the Eureka Mignon Zero’s efficiency as a single dose grinder, you won’t end up with coffee grounds all over your kitchen. What’s more, you’ll seldom have to clean the grounds chute. Still, I would recommend giving it a once over from time to time, just to make sure.

As for cleaning the burrs, Eureka has come up with an awesome “High speed” maintenance system. To access the burrs, you simply remove a cleverly hidden screw on the back of the grinder, enabling you to lift off the entire top plate and hopper. Then, it’s just a case of removing three more screws and voila! There are the burrs.

What’s especially cool is the fact that Eureka has designed this grinder so that the bottom burr moves when you make a grind adjustment. So, removing the top burr for cleaning won’t mess with your settings. Plus, the bottom burr is right there, so you’ll be able to give it a good brushing to remove any buildup.

Eureka Mignon Zero vs Silenzio

Eureka Mignon Silenzio Espresso Grinder

I’m sure a lot of you will be torn between the Mignon Zero and the Eureka Mignon Silenzio. And to be honest, there isn’t much to choose between them. Plus, at $N/A, the Mignon Silenzio is pretty much the same price as the Mignon Zero.

So, how do these grinders differ? Well, the Mignon Zero has much bigger and more meaty burrs and a more powerful motor. Plus, it’s very much a single dose grinder seeing as its hopper has such a limited capacity.

While the Eureka Mignon Silenzio also has stepless grind adjustments, its burrs are on the small side. However, it’s still very capable as an espresso grinder. What’s more, the Mignon Silenzio has a large bean hopper and a timer function, making it more suitable for those with a French press or drip coffee maker.

Verdict: Eureka Mignon Zero Review

Superb single dose grinder

Eureka Mignon Zero

Packed with sophisticated design features

Sleek modern design

Durable construction

Very quiet

Close to zero retention

Stepless grind adjustment

Not suitable for all brew methods

Now that I’ve reached the end of my Eureka Mignon Zero review, I’m more determined than ever to test the thing out. If this burr coffee grinder is even half as cool as I think it is, I’ll be onto a winner.

Ultimately, it seems like the Mignon Zero is ideal for espresso nerds who want the ultimate in control and efficiency. And while it’s supposedly also suitable for pour over and drip coffee, I think having to switch between a fine espresso grind size and a coarser grind size would quickly get frustrating.

I’ll make sure to update this Eureka Mignon Zero review once I’ve spent time playing with the grinder, so make sure to check back in if you’re interested!

What’s your experience using the Eureka Mignon Zero? Is it the ultimate single dose grinder? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section!
