Miele CM 5510 Review: Quiet Please!

Hi! My name is Arne. Having spent years working as a barista I'm now on a mission to bring more good coffee to the people. To that end, my team and I provide you with a broad knowledge base on the subject of coffee.

Our review process | Our team

I'm a completist by nature, so I was surprised to see that I hadn't yet added a Miele CM 5510 review to my automatic espresso machine guide 2024. Well, there's no time like the present, so the Miele CM 5510 Silence is the subject of today's investigation.

Miele CM 5510 Silence Review Overview

I’m a completist by nature, so I was surprised to see that I hadn’t yet added a Miele CM 5510 review to my automatic espresso machine guide 2024. Well, there’s no time like the present, so the Miele CM 5510 Silence is the subject of today’s investigation.

Regular Coffeeness readers will know I’m particularly fond of this German manufacturer. As far as I’m concerned, Miele consistently produces some of the best automatic coffee makers you’ll find. Sure, Miele machines aren’t as flashy and high profile as those produced by Jura or DeLonghi. Still, there’s a lot to be said for flying under the radar while keeping it real.

Anyway, let’s get this show on the road by diving right into my Mile CM 5510 review!

Miele CM 5510 Review Overview

If you happen to have checked out my Miele CM 5310 review, you’d be forgiven for wondering what the heck is going on. Isn’t this exactly the same machine with a chunkier price tag? Granted, these machines do look identical to the untrained eye, and they share many of the same features. However, the Miele CM 5510 does offer enough to justify the added expense. Don’t worry, all will be revealed later!

In the meantime, indulge me as I once again sing the praises of the Miele design team. As much as I love coffee machines that make a statement, there’s something truly special about Miele’s understated design aesthetic. I just can’t get enough of the CM 5510’s clean lines, boxy shape and classy, minimalist vibe. In short, I believe this machine will enhance the visuals of any kitchen.

Miele CM 5510 First Impressions

As far as the user interface goes, Miele has done nothing to modernize the CM 5510. You’ll still operate the machine via sensor buttons and a slightly outdated-looking text display. Although some people might see this as a negative, I don’t attach too much importance to a touchscreen with color icons.

What’s really important is the quality of espresso and milk foam a machine produces, not the fact that you get a pretty picture of a cappuccino!

By now, you might be wondering what the whole “Silence” thing is all about. Well, allow me to enlighten you! Essentially, the folks at Miele decided that the grinder on the earlier CM 5300 was just too loud. So, after addressing the issue, they celebrated their sound-dampening success by adding “Silence” to the names of the CM5 series machines. I’ll talk about the results later in this Miele CM 5510 review.

The Miele CM 5510 will set you back $1,852.29, which is no small amount. However, I’m a big believer in the whole “you get what you pay for” thing. In other words, this automatic coffee maker really knocks it out of the park in terms of value for money. In fact, if you’re a fan of delicious, chocolatey espresso, sublime milk froth and an intuitive user experience, I think you’ll agree!

Miele CM 5510 Features

Now that we’ve got a handle on what this machine is all about, let’s continue this Miele CM 5510 review by taking a closer look at the features on offer.

Colors

Although Miele’s design aesthetic is firmly rooted in a minimalist approach, the manufacturer has lately been pushing the boat out a little with its color options. Apparently, Miele has no problem with letting its customers express themselves a little! Anyway, the Miele CM 5510 is available in the following hues:

By the way, a tayberry is a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry – I just had to look it up! Seeing as supply chain issues appear to be here to stay, you might have a hard time getting the color you want. Plus, you’ll pay more for a popular option like Rose Gold Pearl.

User Interface

The User Interface of the Miele CM 5510 Silence.

As I mentioned earlier in this Miele CM 5510 review, the manufacturer has stuck with its simple user interface. There’s a small text display, surrounded by a few sensor buttons and that’s it. In my experience, this user interface is remarkably approachable, and makes navigating the menus a breeze.

One thing to bear in mind is that Miele doesn’t offer any kind of app to go with this machine. So, if you’re dead set on making an espresso macchiato from the comfort of your couch, you’ll be disappointed.

Stainless Steel Grinder

The Bean Compartement with the Grinder Underneath it of Miele CM 5510 Silence.

The CM 5510 comes equipped with a durable stainless steel conical burr grinder. As it happens, the manufacturer spent a lot of time soundproofing this grinder. From what I can gather, the CM 5510 definitely earns the right to use “Silence” in its name. I’d say that’ll be a big bonus for early risers who don’t want to wake the entire household every morning.

The grinder’s adjustment dial is located behind a service panel, which is kind of strange. However, adjusting the grinder is a straightforward affair. Although there are only five official settings to choose from, the dial feels infinitely adjustable in practice.

Ground Coffee Bypass

During past fully automatic coffee maker reviews, I’ve been known to rail against bypass dosers. However, I’ve since come around to the fact that a ground coffee bypass chute is convenient for when you need to make decaf coffee. I guess I’m mellowing out as I get older!

You’ll find the CM 5510’s bypass doser is up top, next to the bean hopper. Just be careful not to use too much ground coffee for a drink, as the chute can easily clog up.

Milk Froth

The Miele CM 5510 Silence Frothing Milk.

From my experience testing Miele coffee makers, the CM 5510 will produce pretty fantastic milk foam. The automatic milk frother is really well designed, and it’s easy to keep clean too. You simply attach the milk pipe to the machine’s dispensing spout and put the other end in a milk container. Once you’ve done that, you can make specialty drinks without having to move your cup or glass.

By the way, Miele recommends only using cow’s milk with its automatic frother. However, I think there are plenty of non dairy milk options that’d work equally well. Still, just remember to strain your plant-based beverage first, to avoid clogging up the milk pipe.

Specialty Drinks

Espresso, Coffee, Cappuccino and Latte Made by the Miele CM 5510 Silence.

The CM 5510 offers a choice of eight specialty drinks, including latte macchiato, cappuccino, ristretto and coffee. If that seems limiting, remember that you’re able to make all kinds of adjustments to your drinks. So, by adjusting temperature, amount of milk and coffee strength, the options are limitless as to what you can create.

User Profiles

As I just mentioned, the sky’s the limit when it comes to tailoring drinks to your taste with the CM 5510. Even better, you can save all your specialty creations in a personalized user profile.

The Miele CM 5510 only has two individual user profiles, but that should be enough for most coffee loving households. That is, as long as everyone doesn’t mind sharing! The most important thing is that you can save drink parameters without fear of losing them the next time someone uses the machine.

Brew Group

The Removable Brew Group of the Miele CM 5510 Silence.

I find it kind of amusing that most super automatic espresso machine owners haven’t the faintest idea of how the thing actually makes coffee. Many folks take it for granted that they can just push a button and have yummy espresso delivered as if by magic.

What you should know is that the magic happens in a remarkable component called a brew group. Ground coffee is dosed and tamped in here, before the machine forces water under pressure through the puck.

As part of its Aromatic System, the Miele CM 5510 has a dynamic brewing chamber, which expands as water enters. That allows the ground coffee and water to fully mix before brewing begins. The result? Absolutely spectacular espresso!

Cup Height

The Miele CM 5510 Silence Preparing a Latte.

One of the niftiest features of any bean to cup coffee maker is its adjustable dispensing spout. This means you can bring the spout closer to your espresso cups to preserve crema during extraction.

On the flip side, you can move the spout all the way up when you’re masking a drink in a travel mug. The Miele CM 5510’s dispensing spout offers a minimum clearance of 3.1 inches (8 centimeters) and a maximum height of 5.3 inches (13.5 centimeters).

Pot Function

I love super automatics for so many reasons, but making a pot of coffee isn’t one of them. Personally, I prefer making drip coffee by using a pour over coffee maker. Anyway, the CM 5510 does offer a pot function, but the manufacturer doesn’t include an accessory to take advantage of it.

Instead, you’ll have to shell out a hair-raising amount of cash for Miele’s insulated coffee pot. As an alternative, there are tons of options in my guide to the best drip coffee machines. In fact, you can easily spend less and come away with a machine that makes actual drip coffee. Just sayin’.

Child Safety Lock

On a more serious note, Miele’s child safety lock is a thoughtful and welcome feature. Actually, I’m surprised more manufacturers don’t include a safety lock on their machines. With the simple press of a button, your precious CM 5510 will be safe from curious little hands. Come to think of it, those little paws will be protected from getting burned too!

Warranty

Miele is known for producing high-quality appliances, so it’s unlikely anything will go wrong with your coffee maker. Still, the odd faulty machine is bound to slip through the cracks from  time to time.

Fortunately, your CM 5510 comes with a two year warranty, and the manufacturer will take care of any repairs that might be needed. So, make sure to keep your sales receipt in a safe place. Of course, if you purchase this machine via Amazon, you can always access old receipts in your user purchase history.

How to Use the Miele CM 5510

I’ve been adding quite a few reviews to my home espresso machine guide 2024 lately, which has really put automatic machines like the CM 5510 into perspective. Honestly, I’d almost forgotten just how user friendly and easy to operate these coffee makers can be!

Believe me, getting good results from the Miele CM 5510 is a piece of cake. As it happens, the machine takes care of everything. Still, once you get comfortable, there are enough programmable features to keep things interesting.

Before you get started, make sure to clean all removable parts, including the water reservoir and drip tray. Next, add freshly roasted coffee beans to the hopper and fill the tank with filtered water. Incidentally, the machine will ask you to input your water hardness – you can use the included test strip for that. Then, the CM 5510 will perform an initial rinse function.

Drink Preparation

The Miele CM 5510 Silence Preparing a Coffee.

Before you can guzzle your first americano or flat white, you’ll need to brew two or three coffees and throw them out. That way, the machine will be properly seasoned.

Preparing a specialty drink is as easy as pressing one of the drink icon buttons. Alternatively, you can go into the drink menu for more options. As you get more comfortable with the machine, feel free to experiment with grinder settings to really dial in your espresso.

Don’t forget that you’re able to adjust settings like espresso temperature, strength and volume. You can also tinker with milk foam settings to get the amount of froth your heart desires.

Another important setting to be aware of is the pre infusion function. In case you didn’t know, pre infusion involves slightly dampening the ground coffee before brewing. This is a vital part of espresso extraction, as it allows flavors and aromas to fully develop. In other words, ignore the option to turn off pre brewing!

Miele CM 5510 Cleaning

Cleaning the Miele Milk Frother.
Cleaning the Miele Coffee Puck Tray.

From what I’ve seen, too many people neglect their poor coffee makers until something goes wrong, by which time it’s too late. I get it – cleaning and descaling an espresso machine isn’t the most fun you can imagine yourself having. However, performing a few regular tasks will pay dividends in the long run.

Anyway, as super automatics go, the Miele CM 5510 makes it easy on you as far as cleaning goes.

The automatic milk frother has a nifty self cleaning function, but you’ll still need to clean all the parts with warm water at the end of the day. The same goes for the removable brew group, drip tray and used grounds bin. At this point, feel free to empty the water reservoir and wipe down the machine’s exterior with a damp cloth.

Once a month or so, you’ll need to take care of deep cleaning tasks like descaling and flushing the coffee circuit. Don’t ignore the CM 5510 when it asks to be descaled! The machine will guide you through the process, which will take around 15 minutes. You’ll need to use Miele descaling tablets for this.

As for degreasing the brew unit, Miele recommends using its coffee machine cleaning tablets. I’ll leave it up to you to decide whether using a more affordable generic brand will cause your machine to explode.

Miele CM 5510 vs Others

My Miele CM 5510 review wouldn’t be complete without a look at the competition. So, how does the CM 5510 measure up in comparison with a few other popular machines? Let’s find out!

Miele CM 5510 Silence vs CM 5310 Silence

As I mentioned earlier, the Miele CM 5310 Silence looks virtually identical to the CM 5510. However, at $1,746.31, the CM 5310 is slightly less expensive.

Here’s the deal: the Miele CM 5310 doesn’t have programmable user profiles, nor does it have a programmable hot water function. In my opinion, you’re better off spending a little more on the CM 5510 so you don’t have to stress about someone overwriting your precious drink recipes!

Miele CM 5510 Silence vs Jura E6

At $999.00, the Jura E6 certainly gives the Miele CM 5510 a run for its money. Not only is the Jura E6 a beautifully stylish machine, it features a gorgeous color display.

The main downside to the E6 is its milk frothing system, which only produces cappuccino foam. Still, a host of other features including Jura’s amazing Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.) brewing technology and an Aroma G3 grinder make the E6 a very attractive proposition.

Miele CM 5510 Silence vs DeLonghi Dinamica Plus

I always feel like it’s a little unfair to compare other super automatics with the DeLonghi Dinamica Plus. I mean, at this price point, the Dinamica Plus is hard to beat.

Costing $1,306.00, the Dinamica Plus has it all, from a color touchscreen display to the wonderful integrated LatteCrema automatic milk system. The DeLonghi produces pretty darn special espresso too, and even has a TrueBrew Over Ice function for superb iced coffee. Can you tell the Dinamica Plus is one of my favorite machines ever?!

Verdict: Miele CM 5510 Review

reliable and understated

Miele CM 5510 Silence

Enjoy the silence

Sleek, minimalist design

Easy to use

Really quiet grinder

Makes awesome espresso and milk froth

Programmable user profiles

No app or touchscreen

Pot function is unnecessary

This Miele CM 5510 review has reminded me that the German manufacturer isn’t interested in trying to wow you with an app or a fancy touchscreen display. That said, Miele has added those features to some of its more expensive machines.

Still, here in the mid-range arena, Miele seems happy to let Jura and DeLonghi steal the show. I suppose Miele knows that it has a devoted customer base and that its fans know what to expect. Personally, I love the Miele CM 5510 Silence. It’s solid, well-conceived and it makes superb espresso and milk froth. I mean, what more could you ask for?

Tech heads and touchscreen fanatics can feel free not to answer that!

I hope you’ve enjoyed my Miele CM 5510 review. I’d love to hear what you think of this sleek super automatic, so keep the comments coming!
