Jura E6 Review: Still Relevant?

Hi! My name is Arne. Having spent years working as a barista I'm now on a mission to bring more good coffee to the people. To that end, my team and I provide you with a broad knowledge base on the subject of coffee.

No matter how many super automatic espresso machines I test out, there are always a few that slip through the cracks. That's why I'm embarking on this Jura E6 review.

No matter how many super automatic espresso machines I test out, there are always a few that slip through the cracks. That’s why I’m embarking on this Jura E6 review.

Launched in 2017, the Jura E6 is an older model that’s somehow escaped my attention until now. I’m interested to see if it’s still relevant in the ever-evolving super automatic sector.

Plus, I know how much you guys love Jura coffee machines, so I look forward to hearing what you think about this classy looking model.

Jura E6 Coffee Machine Overview

Although my relationship with the Swiss manufacturer got off to somewhat of a rocky start, it’s safe to say that any bad feelings are very much in the past.

As I mentioned in my Jura coffee maker guide, I used to be highly suspicious of the sizeable price tag attached to these machines. However, I’ve since come around to the idea that Jura coffee makers are about as good as it gets when it comes to outstanding espresso quality and user-friendly features.

Jura E6 Overview

The Jura E6 in Piano White costs $1,599.00 on Amazon, which certainly isn’t cheap. However, when you consider that this machine utilizes brewing technology that’s still being used in the manufacturer’s most prestigious and expensive coffee makers, the price seems altogether more reasonable.

As with any super automatic espresso machine manufacturer, Jura likes to toss around important sounding acronyms and abbreviations. So you can be safe in the knowledge that the Jura E6 features I.W.S. (Intelligent Water System) and I.P.B.A.S. (Intelligent Pre-Brew Aroma System) in addition to P.E.P. (Pulse Extraction Process). I’ll do my best to explain those in more detail a little later.

What’s important to know up front is that the Jura E6 is a sophisticated one-touch coffee maker that’ll make wonderful espresso. Not only that, Jura allows you to adjust just about every aspect of the brewing process. The amount of control you’ll have over the results is really quite impressive.

Jura E6 Features

There’s loads to cover in this Jura E6 review, so I don’t want to waste a second! Let’s dive headlong into all the features that make this machine so great.

Design

With its classy, sophisticated design, curved lines and modern features, the E6 has everything you’d expect from a Jura coffee maker. Aside from being a thing of beauty, the Jura E6 also features high-quality materials and everything fits in place nicely.

In keeping with the Jura E6’s elegant design, the bean hopper lid sits flush to the top of the machine, preserving the streamlined look. What’s cool is the airtight seal around the inside of the lid, meaning you don’t have to worry about stale coffee beans in the hopper.

Directly behind the bean hopper, you’ll find a couple of flip-top lids, one reveals the grinder settings and the other provides a convenient way to add cleaning tablets.

To the side of the machine sits the easily removable water reservoir, which has a convenient carry handle. The water reservoir is where you can install a water filter, if you choose to use one. More on that later.

User Interface

Jura E6 User Interface
Jura E6 Display

The Jura E6 features a nicely sized TFT display, with three buttons on either side for making selections.

Although this isn’t a fancy touchscreen display, you’ll have no problems interacting with the coffee maker. Plus, you won’t have to put up with fingerprints all over your screen! The user interface is extremely easy to navigate and the Jura E6 holds your hand the whole way.

Aroma G3 Grinder

The Aroma G3 grinder is another feature of this automatic coffee machine that gets me pretty darn excited. Featuring highly refined stainless steel conical burrs, this grinder is extremely efficient at processing coffee beans.

One of the quieter super automatic grinders I’ve come across, the Aroma G3 also produces very consistent results. You can choose between seven grind settings, but remember that you mustn’t make a change unless the grinder is running.

Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.)

The Jura E6 was the first of the Swiss manufacturer’s coffee makers to feature the innovative Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P), which involves water being forced through ground coffee in short bursts. I’ve experienced the results of this brewing technology from other Jura coffee makers and can report that it’s truly impressive.

With P.E.P., Jura seems to have solved the “curse of the super automatic,” wherein coffee beans can’t be ground finely enough for fear of clogging up the machine. Jura has found a way to extract full bodied, rich espresso from grounds that otherwise would be too coarse for a good extraction.

Water Reservoir

Jura E6 Water Reservoir

Call me crazy, but I even find the Jura coffee maker’s water reservoir attractive. With its gracefully curved lines and convenient carry handle, it sits seamlessly on the left hand side of the machine.

Thanks to its relatively generous capacity, you shouldn’t need to fill the water reservoir more than once a day. With that said, I’d try to avoid leaving water sitting in there for days at a time. Fresh is always best in this case!

Smart Water Filter

Now I finally get to talk about I.W.S.! In case you weren’t paying attention earlier, that stands for Intelligent Water System.

Actually, this is a super cool feature of the Jura E6 coffee maker. You have the option to install a CLEARYL smart water filter in the reservoir, therefore cutting out the need to regularly descale your Jura coffee maker.

The “intelligent” part has to do with the machine and the water filter recognizing each other via RFID technology. I’ll let you Google that last part!

Spout Height

Jura E6 Spout Height

You can easily adjust the spout height on the Jura E6, which really counts during the espresso brewing process. Bringing the spout lower not only prevents splashes but also helps preserve the beautiful thick crema you’ll get from this machine.

The only problem I foresee is when trying to use taller glasses and travel mugs, as the maximum spout height is a miserly 4.4 inches (11 centimeters).

Specialty Coffees

Jura E6 Specialty Coffees

The Jura E6 doesn’t have the wide range of specialty coffees you might expect from such a pricey coffee maker. For milk-based drinks, you have a cappuccino option and that’s it. Although that cappuccino is likely to be pretty special, you’re pretty much out of luck if you want to change the consistency of your milk foam.

That said, you can fine tune the amount of milk foam the machine dispenses to your heart’s content. The same goes for espresso preparation, which is where the Jura E6 really shines. Once you’ve entered “expert mode,” you’re able to adjust coffee strength, water volume and water temperature, then save your settings.

J.O.E. App

Everything these days has an app, which is fine by me. However, some manufacturers insist on dreaming up the most irritating name possible for their smartphone integration.

Case in point: J.O.E. or Jura Operating Experience. I’m sure there were plenty of high fives during the product development meeting, but did Jura really have to follow through with a play on the slang word for coffee?

Anyway, Jura’s app is pretty cool if you like the idea of adjusting and operating your coffee maker from the couch. You’re able to adjust settings, save drinks and monitor water and bean hopper levels.

You can even impress your friends by using J.O.E. on your Apple Watch. The Jura E6 doesn’t come with WiFi connectivity, so you’ll have to buy Jura’s Smart Connect which plugs into the machine and uses Bluetooth.

J.O.E. Knows Siri

As Jura puts it, “Thanks to J.O.E., your Jura coffee machine obeys your every command.” There’s almost the suggestion there that without an app to keep it in check, your automatic coffee machine might go rogue!

What they’re actually talking about is the ability to assign Siri shortcuts to your coffee drinks and order with her assistance when it’s time for an espresso. Personally, I don’t find this very exciting, but it’s a great option for many people, including the visually impaired.

How to Use the Jura E6 Coffee Machine

Jura E6 How to Use

For such a sophisticated super automatic machine, the Jura E6 is remarkably easy for beginners to use. As I already pointed out, the coffee maker walks you through every step of the brewing process, and the user interface is extremely straightforward and intuitive.

Before using the Jura E6, you’ll need to add coffee beans to the hopper and water to the removable reservoir. If you’re using the machine for the first time you’ll have to enter information about water hardness and whether you’re using a water filter or not.

You can, of course, get started right away by selecting preset drinks from the main menu. However, that wouldn’t be taking full advantage of the many ways in which you tailor espresso from the Jura to your specific taste.

Believe me, tweaking with the Jura coffee maker’s settings is well worth it – you can get superb espresso from this machine.

I suggest diving deeper into the menu, where you can find settings for coffee strength and espresso temperature. You also have the option of selecting a shot volume of anywhere from 0.5 ounces (14.8 milliliters) to 2.5 ounces (74 milliliters) which is pretty impressive for any super automatic espresso machine.

Best Coffee for the Jura E6

We have developed a coffee blend for all super automatic espresso machines, including the Jura E6. We tested espresso, black coffee and latte macchiato, all of which displayed powerful chocolatey notes.

It all depends on the beans: if you put something good in at the top, something good will come out at the bottom!

Here are the ideal settings for our coffee with the Jura E6:

  • Grind setting: 3

  • Attention: Only adjust when the grinder is running!

  • Espresso volume: 1.2-1.4 ounces (35-40 milliliters)

  • Coffee volume: 4 ounces (120 milliliters)

  • Temperature: Medium

  • Coffee strength: 6-8

Jura E6 Milk Foam

Jura E6 Milk Foam
Jura E6 Foam

If my experiences with other Jura coffee makers is anything to go by, the Jura E6 is sure to produce pretty fantastic milk foam. Plus, the machine allows you to adjust the volume of the milk foam, so you should be able to dial it in just the way you like it.

Once you’ve perfected your settings, making a cappuccino is a breeze. You simply attach the hose to the frother, submerge the other end in a milk container, then select cappuccino from the Jura’s menu.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, Jura still doesn’t throw in a complimentary milk flask with its (very expensive) machines. Believe me, I’ll keep complaining until the Swiss manufacturer changes its ways! Still, you can buy a Jura Glass Milk Container for $31.48 if you want.

The Jura E6 only has one thermoblock, so you can’t prepare coffee and milk simultaneously. However, the Jura grinds the coffee before dispensing hot milk, so it’s ready to go once the milk foam is in the cup. You can even program the Jura coffee maker to delay the espresso extraction for a few seconds if you want the foam to settle first.

Jura E6 Coffee Machine Cleaning

Jura E6 Cleaning

I’ve never been afraid to admit that Jura’s policy of installing permanent brew groups in its automatic coffee makers makes me more than a little nervous. You may accuse me of having trust issues, but I know how nasty a brew group can get without being properly cleaned on a regular basis.

That said, Jura seems to know what it’s doing here. Anyway, my year-long Jura A1 test proved that the fixed brew group really does get thoroughly clean. The machine lets you know when it’s time to run a coffee system cleaning cycle, although you can choose to run one at any time.

You should empty the water reservoir at the end of each day and give it a rinse. The drip tray and coffee grounds container should also be emptied and rinsed on the daily. The same goes for the fine foam frother and milk pipe.

The Jura E6 will let you know when it needs to be descaled, and will walk you through the process. It’s really easy – just a case of putting a cleaning tablet into the filler funnel.

As you might imagine, Jura wants you to only use their cleaning tablets, claiming anything else might damage the machine. For once, I’d recommend trusting the manufacturer on that.

Of course, you can skip the whole descaling thing by using a water filter. From where I’m sitting, this seems like the way to go. I always recommend using filtered water for espresso, and not having to descale my coffee maker as often sounds pretty good!

Jura E6 vs Other Super Automatics

Let’s take a look at how the Jura E6 coffee maker measures up to another Jura machine and a similar coffee maker from another manufacturer.

Jura E6 vs Jura E8

vs Jura E8

I pretty much fell in love with the Jura E8 during my review of this awesome coffee maker. An updated “older sibling” to the E6, this Jura coffee maker shares all the same features, including P.E.P and I.W.S.

However, there are plenty of extras to justify the Jura E8’s $2,485.00 price tag on Amazon.

Aside from producing exceptional espresso, the Jura E8 knocks it out of the park when creating milk foam. This machine allows you to choose from 17 specialties, including latte and espresso macchiato. You also have the option to fine-tune your microfoam, thanks to a dial on the milk nozzle.

Jura E6 vs DeLonghi Dinamica Plus

vs DeLonghi Dinamica Plus

Costing $1,299.75 on Amazon, the DeLonghi Dinamica Plus is, perhaps, the Jura E6’s most direct competitor.

Featuring an impressive touchscreen display and DeLonghi’s Coffee Link app, the Dinamica Plus menu of 16 coffee specialties is easy to navigate and the espresso quality is as high as you’d expect from the Italian manufacturer.

As I mentioned in my review of this machine, it’s the LatteCrema system that’s the number one reason to buy the Dinamica Plus. Featuring a thermal jug that fits on the machine, the LatteCrema system produces some of the finest milk foam I’ve seen.

Jura E6 Coffee Maker

Offers a lot of value

Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.)

High quality design and build

Automatic milk frothing

Water filter option

Easy to clean

Only 7 specialty coffees

Only one thermoblock

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Jura makes some of the most impressive super automatic espresso machines on the market. Even though the Jura E6 is a few years old, it’s far from irrelevant.

As long as you aren’t attached to the idea of being able to finely adjust your milk foam, this Jura coffee maker will impress you with its build quality, sleek design and the outstanding quality of the espresso you can get from the thing.

Given that some of the E6’s fancy-sounding abbreviations are also used in Jura machines that cost three or four times as much, the purchase price seems more than reasonable, too.

IMO the Jura E6 is SRSLY awesome! What do you think? Do you have any experience using this high-end machine? I look forward to your comments!

Jura E6 Coffee Machine FAQ

The Jura E6 is a high-quality super automatic coffee machine that’s not only well made but also features innovative technology, such as Jura’s Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.), to help you get the perfect cup of coffee.

The Jura app can be used with the Apple Watch to save up to three of your favorite specialty coffees. That way, coffee lovers can prepare a drink with one tap of their watch!

You can assign Siri shortcuts to your saved coffee specialties, then prepare drinks with your Jura E6 using voice commands.

To set up the Jura E6, place it on a flat surface away from water and with plenty of ventilation. Add beans to the hopper and water to the reservoir before programming your water hardness. Once you’ve turned the Jura E6 on, the machine will perform several filling, heating and rinsing functions.
