What Is a Programmable Coffee Maker Exactly?
Have you ever woken up and wished that the coffee would just make itself? Or even better, that it was already waiting for you? Well, unless you can afford to hire a personal barista, buying a programmable drip coffee maker might be the way to go.
As it happens, programmable coffee makers are now fairly common. They work by using a built-in clock and a timer function, which you can use to set the time you want the machine to start brewing. What’s more, most models give you the ability to do so up to 24 hours in advance.
Of course, seeing as we’re well into the 21st century, you can expect more than just a delay brew function from the best programmable coffee makers. Heck, some of the models on my list allow you to tweak every brewing parameter under the sun. Plus, many machines offer things like an auto-pause function for sneaking a cup mid brew and auto shutoff capabilities.
How Do You Use a Programmable Coffee Maker?
Assuming you already know how to use a drip machine, setting up your programmable coffee maker to start brewing at a specific time will be a walk in the park. While instructions for specific models will vary slightly, here’s the lowdown on what to expect:
Start by making sure you’ve set the correct time on your coffee maker.
Make sure the reservoir is full of filtered water.
Pop a filter in the brew basket, then add your preferred amount of ground coffee.
Using the program function, set your desired brew start time.
Finally, make sure to activate the coffee maker’s timer.
Of course, the main downside to using a programmable coffee maker in this way is that you won’t be experiencing coffee made using freshly ground beans. And seeing as your ground coffee will be sitting around for hours, it’ll lose some of its aroma and complexity through oxidation. Then again, sometimes you have to take a hit to get an easy hit!
Best Programmable Coffee Makers: My Top X Picks
OK, now that you have a clearer idea of what we’re dealing with, let’s get to the good stuff. Below, you’ll find detailed reviews of my programmable coffee maker picks. Oh, and if you already have a specific model in mind, feel free to skip ahead and read all about it!

Seeing as you’re able to access and adjust a whole host of brewing parameters, the Aiden lets you dial in your coffee to a tee. Plus, there’s a cool app for going even deeper into the rabbit hole. On the other hand, those who simply want a great cup of coffee without all the work have options too. You can either use the manufacturer’s presets for coffee roast profiles or use the Bypass Brew mode for a quick cup.
The Fellow Aiden comes with a thermal carafe as well as two brew baskets. This means you can use the thing as a batch brewer or a single serve coffee maker. Heck, there’s even a dual shower head that you adjust depending on which basket you’re using.
Costing $399.95, the Fellow Aiden isn’t cheap. However, given its sophistication and the quality of coffee it produces, I just had to award it the title of “Best Overall” programmable coffee maker.

The enduring Breville Precision Brewer narrowly missed the top spot, so I’ve decided to award it the title of “Best Performing” programmable coffee maker.
Retailing for $319.99, this is another pricey coffee maker. But again, I can tell you that the Precision Brewer is very much worth the investment. For starters, the Breville Precision Brewer looks great and features high-quality stainless steel construction. Furthermore, this machine offers a world of customization options.
There are a whopping six brew modes, including Gold – which earns the Precision Brewer its Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) certification – and My Brew, which lets you customize a ton of parameters. So, if you like to nerd out on bloom times and flow rates, this brew mode will be right up your alley.
During my testing I was blown away by the Breville’s performance, and enjoyed cup after cup of delicious coffee. I particularly appreciated the fact that I could brew a full thermal carafe or use a separate filter basket for single cups. Oh, and trust me, this baby is capable of producing cup results that’ll consistently rival your best pour-over technique.

Another of my all-time faves, the Ninja Specialty Coffee Maker CM401 has a lot to offer those who like to have options. In saying that, I’m referring to the fact that the Ninja CM401 features multiple brew sizes and brew styles.
You can make anything from a standard 10-ounce (296-milliliter) cup to a full 50-ounce (1.5-liter) carafe, with plenty of options in between. Oh, and there’s a cool foldaway cup shelf for brewing into smaller cups.
As for brew styles, this SCA-certified coffee maker offers Classic, Rich, Over Ice and Specialty options. The latter brew style is a concentrated 4-ounce (118-milliliter) coffee that’s meant to approximate espresso. And while it actually tastes more like moka pot coffee, it’s actually rather good.
Costing $179.99, the Ninja Specialty Coffee Maker CM401 represents great value for money in my opinion. After all, this machine is equipped with pretty advanced brewing technology and a 24-hour delay brew timer. Heck, there’s even a cool foldaway frother for creating milk-based specialty drinks.

If you’re looking for a minimalist programmable coffee maker that looks amazing and performs like a champ, consider the OXO 9-Cup Coffee Maker.
During my testing, I was really impressed by this machine’s capabilities. Sure, there’s no brew strength or temperature control. However, the OXO 9-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker has been specially calibrated to produce exceptional coffee every time. I guess that’s why this machine earned the SCA’s coveted Golden Cup certification for exemplary brewers.
I love the OXO 9-Cup’s understated digital display, and the simple dial makes it easy to navigate the machine’s functions. From here, you can set the OXO to brew either 2-4 cups or 5-9 cups, and the coffee maker will adjust the water flow rate accordingly. You can also program the machine to start at your desired time.
The OXO 9-Cup Coffee Maker consistently brews coffee at the optimal temperature for extraction, which is why the SCA stands behind it. What’s more, the machine’s lovely thermal carafe keeps your coffee hot for hours and even has a silicone mixing tube to prevent separation when pouring.
At $221.11, the OXO 9-Cup Coffee Maker is on the pricier side, but I’d say it’s worth every penny.

Compared to some of my other best programmable coffee maker picks, the Cuisinart DCC 3200 is rather straightforward and unassuming. However, the fact remains that not everyone wants endless adjustment options and brew sizes. In fact, plenty of folks just want a decent coffee maker that’ll do its thing and do it well.
Enter the Cuisinart 14-Cup Coffee Maker, which will run you Cuisinart DCC 3200 on Amazon.
This stylish machine has few bells and whistles, but it does offer a couple of brew styles and, of course, a brew scheduling function. Elsewhere, notable features include a reusable gold tone filter and a slick glass carafe.
During my testing, I was able to make some truly great coffee with the Cuisinart DCC 3200. And I was really impressed by the way the machine’s showerhead performed. With that said, the machine isn’t the fastest model I’ve ever seen, and the coffee could have been a bit hotter.
Ultimately though, if you want a solid drip machine with a large brewing capacity, the Cuisinart 14-Cup could be just the ticket.

Currently retailing for $529.95, the DeLonghi TrueBrew is easily the most expensive programmable coffee maker on this list. And while I understand that spending that much money on a coffee machine might seem crazy to a lot of you, bear with me – this thing stands apart.
For starters, the DeLonghi TrueBrew has a built-in grinder as well as a bypass chute for preground coffee. What’s more, this is more of a “super-automatic” coffee maker than a drip machine. The TrueBrew is equipped with an internal brew group rather than a brew basket and filter. That means you simply press a button and the machine will whip up a cup of coffee lickety split. Plus, cleanup is a breeze – you simply empty the used grounds container when it gets full.
Offering multiple cup sizes, the DeLonghi TrueBrew is an effective single serve coffee maker that’s a great alternative to a pod machine. Oh, and you should know that the TrueBrew makes excellent hot and iced coffee, and even espresso! Finally, this is the only machine on my list that makes coffee from freshly ground beans when you use the Auto-On function. How cool is that!

Costing $179.93, the Braun MultiServe Coffee Maker isn’t exactly a cheap coffee maker. Still, I believe it offers a superb price-performance ratio and thus represents very good value for money.
During my testing, I kind of fell in love with the Braun MultiServe. This sleek, modern-looking machine not only looks great, it delivers on its promise of excellent coffee.
I particularly enjoyed the iced coffee this beauty produces, as well as the drip coffee when I used the SCA-certified Gold setting. And it was clear that Braun’s ExactBrew System isn’t just fancy marketing lingo. As it happens, the machine adjusts water flow rate, temperature and bloom time depending on your brew strength and size selections, and I enjoyed consistently satisfying cup results.
Incidentally, the Braun MultiServe gets its name from the fact that you can select from a whopping seven brew sizes. This means you can quickly make a single cup, pump out a full travel mug for the road or wait for a full 50-ounce (1.5-liter) carafe.

What to Look for in a Programmable Coffee Maker
By now, many of you will have started gravitating toward one or another of my programmable coffee maker picks. However, I’d totally understand if some of you still feel a little overwhelmed and confused. I mean, all the machines I’ve reviewed above are pretty fantastic, so how are you supposed to choose?!
Well, fear not – I’ve got you covered. As promised, I’ve come up with a few factors to consider if you’re not yet set on which machine to buy. So, take a deep breath, relax and let’s do this!
Size and Design
In all likelihood, your programmable coffee maker will be sitting out in your kitchen. With that in mind, you should try to go for a model that you find at least somewhat attractive. After all, it’s you that’ll be seeing the thing first thing every morning.
You should also consider the size of any coffee maker you’re thinking about buying. Some are on the taller side, so overhead cabinets could be a concern. Plus, the larger a machine’s footprint, the more counter space it’ll take up. I recommend taking careful measurements before committing. That way, you can be certain that your new coffee maker will fit into your kitchen setup.
Finally, you should take the coffee maker’s water tank into account. Some are removable for easy filling, while others are fixed in place. Either way, make sure you know what you’re getting so you don’t end up suffering from buyer’s remorse.
Brew Capacity
For some reason, coffee maker manufacturers still refer to 5-ounce “cups” when referring to a machine’s brew capacity. A larger capacity coffee maker like the Cuisinart DCC 3200 can brew up to 60 ounces (1.5 liters) of coffee, making it ideal for larger families or those who like to throw coffee parties. However, that might seem like overkill for some folks.
Smaller capacity coffee makers will often cost less and take up less space. Alternatively, some models offer multiple brew sizes, ranging from one cup to a full carafe.
Adjustable Settings
All programmable coffee makers let you set the brew time, but some models offer a whole lot more than that. If you’re the kind of coffee drinker that likes to experiment with temperature, bloom time, flow rate and so on, consider a more advanced machine with tons of adjustable settings. However, if you just want a simple, straightforward way to get your daily caffeine fix, you can spend less on a more basic machine with a straightforward brewing process.
Another thing to consider is whether or not your chosen programmable coffee maker comes with a thermal carafe. In my opinion, this is the way to go, seeing as the carafe will keep coffee hot without burning it. Still, the best thermal carafe coffee makers are usually more expensive. So, if you end up going with a glass carafe model, check to see whether it has an adjustable hotplate function. Ideally, you’ll be able to set the warming time and even the temperature.
Special Features
Aside from adjustable settings, some programmable coffee makers come with extra special features that you may or may not care about. For example, the DeLonghi TrueBrew has a built-in grinder, making it a completely self-contained coffee machine. Other models include features like milk frothers and special brew styles.
Of course, you’ll pay a premium for these add-ons. So, take the time to think about whether you’ll ever need to froth milk or make cold brew with your programmable coffee maker. It could end up being the case that all you want is a cup of hot coffee instead of a specialty brew with milk foam.
Final Verdict: The Best Programmable Coffee Maker for Your Needs
Now that we’ve reached the end of my guide to the best programmable coffee makers, I hope that I’ve helped you find a model to suit your needs. To be honest, any of my top picks will make you happy – I’ve tested ’em all and enjoyed great coffee every time. To recap, here are my recommendations for those of you still agonizing over a decision:
Best for anyone: The Ninja Specialty Coffee Maker CM401 offers multiple brew styles and sizes, and won’t break the bank.
Best for coffee nerds: The outstanding Fellow Aiden Precision Coffee Maker gives you a stunning amount of control over your brew.
Best for large families: The Cuisinart 14-Cup Coffee Maker is a straightforward machine that brews up to 60 ounces (1.5 liters) of coffee.
Our Methodology: How We Tested These Programmable Coffee Makers
I personally tested all the programmable coffee makers on my list. I spent several sessions with each model, paying attention to its performance and assessing its value. And if a coffee maker was SCA certified, I made sure to measure whether or not it actually met the required standards.
In doing all this, I can feel good about recommending a coffee maker to my readers if I think it’s up to snuff. And if I don’t think a specific model is up to par, I’ll never shy away from letting you know.
Here are the criteria I adhere to whenever I’m testing out a coffee maker:
Coffee quality: I always use 100% Arabica beans when I’m testing a coffee maker. I brew multiple batches over several sessions, evaluating the coffee for taste, body, complexity and more. I also take note of how evenly the coffee maker saturates the bed of ground coffee when I’m evaluating each brew cycle.
Ease of use: I try to approach every new coffee maker from a beginner standpoint. That way, I’m able to evaluate its user friendliness. I also pay attention to cleaning functions, water tanks and programmable settings to see whether the coffee maker offers an intuitive user experience.
Consistency: Because I spend several days testing each machine, I’m able to gather valuable information as to its consistency and overall performance.
Price-performance ratio: Your budget is at the forefront of your mind as you’re shopping for a coffee maker. So, I always evaluate test machines based on my perception of their price-performance ratio. And you’ll be the first to know if I think a machine is overpriced for what you get.
FAQs
A programmable coffee maker has a clock and a built-in timer. Using these functions, you can set the machine to brew coffee at a precisely specified time, usually up to 24 hours in advance.
In my opinion, Fellow makes the best programmable coffee maker.
It’s difficult to say which is the most dependable coffee maker, seeing as there are so many contenders for the title. However, a good bet would be the Technivorm Moccamaster.
