Overview: Sanremo You Espresso Machine Review

First seen in 2021, the Sanremo You espresso machine instantly caught the attention of espresso enthusiasts. This ultra-premium espresso machine has been designed to change the game for elite home baristas.

Featuring a touchscreen display and sleek, modern design language, the Sanremo You can pretty much do it all. In saying that, I’m referring to the fact that you can program a mind-boggling amount of espresso shot parameters, as well as take over and pull shots manually.

Sanremo You Espresso Machine Overview

Plus, the manufacturer has included insane amounts of technology, including a hybrid pump and sensors galore.

While the Sanremo You comes off as very intimidating, it’s actually very user-friendly. Then again, I’d say those buying this machine will want to take advantage of all the features on offer.

Rated as both a commercial and home espresso machine, the Sanremo You can be plumbed into a water line, which is really cool. However, I’d say this beauty would only really be suitable for low volume commercial environments.

Sanremo You Price

I can’t go any further into this review without bringing up the issue of price.

As I mentioned earlier, the Sanremo You ain’t cheap. More specifically, you’ll have to shell out a whopping $6,950 to get hold of this spectacular prosumer espresso machine.

Now, to most folks that’ll seem like a stupid amount to spend on a coffee maker. However, if espresso is your passion and you can afford to spend whatever it takes, the Sanremo You is worth considering.

After all, it’ll never get better than this. In other words, if you’ve been wondering how to choose an espresso machine that you’ll never grow out of, the Sanremo You might just be the one you need.

Sanremo You Features

Size and Design

Sanremo You Espresso Machine Size

I happen to love the way the Sanremo You looks. Like all the best Italian espresso machines, the You is a joy to behold, featuring a sharp, modern silhouette. What’s more, you can expect premium materials and higher-than-high quality construction.

As it happens, the Sanremo You is a fairly compact machine, standing 15.5 inches (39.4 centimeters) tall, with a depth of 21 inches. That said, this is a beast of a machine that weighs a hefty 70 pounds (32 kilograms).

Dual Boilers

The Sanremo You features dual stainless steel boilers. There’s a 0.5-liter brew boiler and a 1-liter steam boiler, both of which might seem kind of small. However, the manufacturer kept these boilers on the smaller side to make the machine quicker to heat and more energy efficient.

Plus, there’s a modified E61 group head, which is PID controlled and heats independently of the boiler. This means that the machine achieves incredible levels of thermal stability as well as greater efficiency than the competition.

User Interface

Sanremo You Espresso Machine User Interface

As I mentioned earlier, the Sanremo You features a large touchscreen display. The screen provides a dazzling amount of information about your espresso shots, and looks fairly off-putting at first glance. However, I’m assured that once you become familiar with how the machine works, all the information will start to make more sense.

Incidentally, you can also access the machine’s menus via the Sanremo You app, but all the information can be accessed by using the touchscreen.

Elsewhere, there’s the all important manual brewing paddle, as well as toggle switches for activating the steam and hot water functions.

Pressure Profiling

These days, pressure profiling is all the rage among baristas looking to control every aspect of their espresso extraction. Meant to emulate a lever machine’s hands-on method of making espresso, pressure profiling can make it hard to maintain consistency from shot to shot.

Fortunately, the folks at Sanremo were determined to solve this problem with the You espresso machine. They designed a brand new gear pump and installed an array of sensors in and around the group head.

The result is that the machine knows exactly what you want, based on your input (either manually or via the touchscreen) and modulates the pump’s RPMs accordingly. This is a truly innovative and fairly revolutionary approach, making the Sanremo You incredibly versatile and consistent.

Programming

A huge part of what makes the Sanremo You such a powerful and versatile machine is its programmability. To be clear, there will be somewhat of a steep learning curve with this espresso maker, seeing as there’s so much you can do. Adjustable parameters include:

  • Brew temperature

  • Pre infusion time and pressure

  • Post infusion pressure

  • Flow rate

  • Shot volume

The Sanremo You comes with a number of “recipes” and you’re also able to program and save up to 22 pressure profiles.

With all that said, you can also operate the You manually, using the brew paddle, which will likely feel more intuitive. And once you’ve done that for a shot, you’ll have the opportunity to save the profile.

Steam Wand

Sanremo You Espresso Machine Steam Wand

While the Sanremo You will mainly appeal to fans of straight espresso, it has powerful milk steaming capabilities. I love the look of the cool-touch steam wand, and it’s very beefy and versatile. What’s more, you can easily adjust the steam boiler’s pressure.

I should also mention the hot water dispenser, which draws a mix of cold water and water from the steam boiler. Best of all, you can precisely dial in the blend, which long black lovers will surely appreciate.

Sanremo You Accessories

I’m sure you won’t be surprised to hear that the Sanremo You comes with a premium selection of accessories. Here’s what you get:

  • 58mm spouted portafilter

  • 58mm bottomless portafilter

  • Single and double filter baskets

  • Milk steaming pitcher

  • Metal tamper

  • Group brush

  • Backflushing basket

Personally, I’m happy to see that the manufacturer included a bottomless portafilter. Oh, and I’d encourage you to buy a calibrated tamper, but I suspect those buying this baby will already own all the espresso accessories under the sun!

Getting Started: How Does the Sanremo You Work?

There’s no way I could explain all the ins and outs of the machine in this Sanremo You review. I think I’ll just leave that to the Sanremo You Manual.

However, I can suggest that you start using the machine in manual brewing mode as you’re learning the ropes. That way, you’ll be able to pull shots while taking note of all the information presented on the touchscreen. And as you start to become familiar with the machine’s feedback, everything will start to make sense.

With that in mind, start pulling shots using the manual brew paddle. Feel free to play around with pre-infusion times and pressure ramping as you go. Not only will you get a “feel” for the machine, you’ll start to understand exactly what you’re looking for in your shots.

Oh, and don’t forget that you can save a few manual brewing profiles if you’re happy with how they turned out. That way, you can easily replicate your shots without having to start from scratch.

Sanremo You vs Other Espresso Machines

Let’s continue this Sanremo You review by looking at how it compares to a couple of other premium prosumer machines.

Sanremo You vs La Marzocco GS3

La Marzocco GS3

The impact of the La Marzocco GS3 can’t be overstated. This was the machine that changed the game for home espresso enthusiasts.

Aside from its commercial components, saturated group head and PID temperature control, the GS3 features an incredibly sensitive brew paddle for incredibly accurate pressure profiling.

Sanremo has taken this idea and run with it, resulting in a programmable machine offering versatility the La Marzocco can’t match.

Ultimately, the $7,900 GS3 is for complete espresso nerds who demand a full-on tactile experience. On the other hand, the Sanremo You is for full-on espresso nerds who want even greater control over brewing parameters and a more high-tech experience.

Sanremo You vs La Marzocco Linea Mini

La Marzocco Linea Mini

Costing around the same as the Sanremo You, the La Marzocco Linea Mini is a super popular home espresso machine that’s also suitable for light commercial use.

True to its name, the Linea Mini is a compact, yet powerful machine. Plus, I’d say the La Marzocco is more approachable for those who don’t need to mess around with pressure profiling.

Featuring dual boilers, PID control and many adjustable parameters, the Linea Mini is a formidable machine that’ll appeal to the most demanding of home espresso enthusiasts.

There can be little doubt that the Sanremo You is a quite astonishing espresso machine. The manufacturer has really thrown down the gauntlet here by pushing the boundaries of what an espresso machine can do.

While the Sanremo You certainly comes off as intimidating, it’s really just an espresso machine at heart. And thanks to the manual brew paddle, you can start brewing quality shots right off the bat.

With that said, I wouldn’t recommend investing close to seven grand on a machine like this unless you fully intend to take advantage of all the features on offer.

That’s it for my Sanremo You review. If any of you guys own this machine I’d love to hear what you think. Feel free to share your experiences in the comments section below!
