Overview: La Marzocco Linea Mini Review

Why is La Marzocco so enduringly popular? I mean walk into any cafe of note, and you’ll likely find a La Marzocco! In fact, in 2023, La Marzocco brought in $252 million in sales revenue.

This legendary commercial machine manufacturer makes some of the best Italian espresso machines. Their superpower has been in customizing them for the home market. With the improved Linea Mini R, they’ve continued this tradition. Riding on the success of the OG Linea Mini, this new version brings substantial commercial brewing capabilities to home brewers.

At its core is a PID-controlled dual boiler system. It also boasts a saturated group head, brew paddle with barista lights and high-quality stainless steel and brass components.

Other key features include two-stage pre-infusion, a new brew-by-weight mode and a digital shot timer. Also notable are easy pump pressure adjustments and auto-rinsing. Lastly, the removable water reservoir, drip tray and cool-touch steam wand make maintenance stress-free.

Another factor that makes this machine so popular is the manageable La Marzocco Linea Mini size. With a height of 15 inches (38.1 centimeters), it’ll fit most countertops. Above all, this machine ranks for durability, versatility and convenience. Its bottomless portafilter comes with single and double-spout attachments and various-sized baskets, as well as a blind basket for backflushing. Other useful accessories include a 58-millimeter convex tamper, milk pitcher and machine cleaner.

While the price is steep, as this La Marzocco Linea Mini review will show, this machine still offers long-term value. It’s perfect for classic espresso lovers, caterers and professionals who brew at home. Indeed, in line with fourth-wave coffee culture, it straddles that fine line between cafe and home coffee culture. And it does so beautifully!

La Marzocco Linea Mini Price

I won’t go into price too much in this La Marzocco Linea Mini R review. It costs approximately $6,000 and, thus, isn’t for everyone. In its defense, it is a commercial machine. Just scaled down for home use. The exorbitant price thus reflects its extraordinary engineering and durability.

Compared to other machines in its category, this espresso coffee machine for home use represents pretty good value. First, it’s handmade. In Italy! Second, it uses top-tier components like marine-grade stainless steel and chrome-plated brass. Third, it significantly improves on the original Linea Mini.

Unlike the earlier version, it boasts easy screw-top pump pressure adjustment. It also has dual solenoid valves (for low-pressure pre-infusion and pre-brew), a new gicleur valve for enhanced flow rate control and a digital shot timer. Naturally, these new improvements justify the price.

So, yes, this machine is expensive. But given the exciting new features and enhanced capabilities, I believe it’s worth it. Thankfully, many retailers offer promos and financing options. This makes it more accessible to La Marzocco diehards.

La Marzocco Linea Mini R Espresso Machine Features

So, how do the features of the La Marzocco Linea Mini R espresso machine measure up? Read on for my detailed breakdown.

Size and Design

The Linea Mini R is basically a commercial machine adapted for home use. At its core, it captures the essence of La Marzocco branding and legendary Italian design. Its Della Pietra curves (all hail legendary head designer Stefano Della Pietra), robust stainless steel exterior and color-matched backsplash echo the brand’s Italian heritage.

The La Marzocco Linea Mini dimensions are manageable. Thanks to its relatively compact footprint, It’ll fit on most countertops. In terms of the La Marzocco Linea Mini weight, clocking in at 71 pounds (32.21 kilograms), it’s light enough for home use.

La Marzocco Linea Mini Size

Every design element feels intentional. The saturated brew group, ergonomic steam wand and super-intuitive controls all work for the good of this machine. The drip tray and water reservoir, too. These are generously sized and removable. Plus, an integrated espresso cup warmer adds a practical and visually-appealing touch.

What I love most about the Linea Mini R is how it distills La Marzocco’s commercial machine DNA. It’s certainly less cumbersome than the original. And it’s not just smaller but more intelligent. La Marzocca clearly designed it with both the professional and amateur in mind.

La Marzocco Linea Mini Colors

La Marzocco espresso machines come in an attractive range of colors. The three main options – Stainless Steel, Matte Black and White – integrate seamlessly into most kitchen aesthetics. It’s also worth noting that La Marzocco has put a powder coating on these finishes for added durability.

While these are standard options, La Marzocco branding also has brighter colors. These include Light Blue, Yellow and Red. Naturally, when these come into circulation, they become instant collector’s items.

User Interface

The La Marzocco Linea Mini R’s user interface is a masterful blend of Italian craftsmanship and digital innovation. The one thing that stands out for me in this La Marzocco Linea Mini review, is the semi-automatic brew paddle. Some find it cosmetic, but, to me, it look’s satisfyingly tactile.

On this user interface, physical controls take center stage. Barista lights and soft-touch knobs for steam and hot water are visible enough. Also visible are the pressure gauge and digital shot timer, which provide precise brewing control.

LED indicators communicate the machine’s status, from power and heating to potential issues like low water levels.

But the crowning feature is the La Marzocco Home app integration (more on this later). It transforms this espresso experience into an effortless one.

The result is a user interface that feels both familiar and cutting-edge. It respects the artisanal roots of espresso making but embraces the possibilities of modern tech.

Portafilter

The Linea Mini R’s portafilter takes things up a notch. Crafted from chrome-plated brass, this bottomless portafilter offers exceptional heat stability. Also included are interchangeable single, double and triple filter baskets for use with the portafilter. Plus a blind backflush basket for cleaning.

The 58-millimeter La Marzocco Linea Mini portafilter size is no accident. It’s the industry standard and ensures superior water distribution for optimal flavor extraction. In addition, the ergonomic portafilter handle provides a secure, balanced grip. This reduces fatigue during coffee preparation.

Premium machines often provide two portafilters – one with a single spout and another with a double spout. They may sometimes provide a separate bottomless portafilter. La Marzocco did the thing and combined these components. Basically, they offer a bottomless portafilter with two interchangeable black plastic spout attachments.

Made of food-grade polymer plastic, these attachments will preserve your coffee’s flavor as they won’t take on any odors. And as they’re detachable, they more than simplify cleaning. Very thoughtful features for a very thoughtful machine!

Brew Group

The brew group is where coffee transforms into liquid art. In the Linea Mini R, it’s a masterpiece of precision engineering. Crafted from marine-grade brass, it ensures remarkable thermal stability. Unlike other espresso machines, the Linea Mini R doesn’t suffer temperature variations.

Thanks to dual boilers, it maintains a consistent 200-degree Fahrenheit (93-degree Celsius) temperature. As a result, each shot – whether it’s your first or fifth – delivers the same classic espresso flavor profile.

But it’s in the La Marzocco Linea Mini flow control where true magic happens. This feature leverages dual solenoid valves to pre-infuse the coffee puck and gicleur valves to limit the flow of water into the brew chamber and saturate the puck slowly. As a result, pump pressure remains low during pre-infusion and pre-brew, only ramping up to 9-bar during extraction.

A soft touch, semi-automatic, powder-coated brew paddle straddles this brew group. Some think it’s a glorified on/off switch. But I see it as more of a convenience, albeit retro, component (it gives a nod to the classic La Marzocco GS1). It has convenient barista lights in on mode, a blinking blue light for low water and a red light for power and heating. It also quickly activates an electronic switch for on-demand brewing. In my opinion, this saturated group brings professional-level performance to home brewing experiences.

Dual Boilers

The dual boiler system is an impressive feature of this La Marzocco Linea Mini review. Unlike a single-boiler machine, dual boiler machines enable simultaneous brewing and steaming.

The first is a heat-exchange 16.9-ounce (0.5-liter) brew boiler. The second, a capacious 118-ounce (3.5-liter) steam boiler. The brew boiler maintains a precise temperature of 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93 degrees Celsius). This temperature is perfect for espresso extraction. Meanwhile, the steam boiler sits at a higher temperature range of 185-221 degrees Fahrenheit (85-105 degrees Celsius). This higher temperature quickly transforms cold milk into silky perfection with perfect milk foam.

This dual boiler design on the Linea Mini R is a hallmark feature. Unlike a single boiler, these dual boilers allow for thermal stability and precise temperature control. As a result, the Linea Mini R guarantees you consistently good espresso.

La Marzocco Linea Mini Portafilter

PID Temperature Control

In the world of precision espresso brewing, PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) temperature control is non-negotiable. This sophisticated digital temperature management system is the secret weapon for good shots.

Unlike traditional machines with thermostats, the Linea Mini R’s PID controller is a mini-computer. It carries out La Marzocco Linea Mini temperature adjustment with millisecond-level precision. Crucially, this eliminates temperature fluctuations that can rob espresso of its complexity and flavor.

For coffee lovers, this translates to remarkable temperature control. Especially if you’re pulling multiple shots in succession.

Pre Infusion

Pre-infusion is the secret sauce behind perfect espresso extraction. In the Linea Mini R, it’s game-changing.

How exactly does it work? Well, pre-infusion saturates coffee grounds with low-pressure water before full extraction begins. It allows water to slowly penetrate the coffee bed, evenly moistening coffee grounds. As such, they absorb water and begin to expand.

In the Linea Mini R dual solenoid valves are responsible for pre-infusion. They apply a low 3 to 4-bar pressure water flow for several seconds. It’s only when brewing begins that they ramp up to full 9-bar extraction pressure.

This gentle approach helps break down coffee’s oils and volatile compounds. It also prevents channeling, the root of inconsistent espresso.

The best part? You can adjust pre-infusion settings via the La Marzocco Home app! Not only does the Linea Mini R do pre-infusion well, it also makes it easy!

Cool Touch Steam Wand

The Linea Mini R espresso machine’s Cool Touch steam wand is a stroke of ingenious engineering. Unlike traditional steam wands that reach scorching temperatures, this wand remains cool to the touch. It does so even without a PEEK-polymer plastic-covered steam tip. This means you can position, adjust and maneuver it while steaming milk without the fear of searing your fingers.

Another helpful feature, and a must-mention for this La Marzocco Linea R Mini review, is its adjustable steam power settings. There are three steam options, with increasing difficulty levels.

As a beginner the lowest setting is best to start with. You can then crank up the power as your milk-frothing skills improve. Just another example of La Marzocco incorporating basic and advanced features in the Linea Mini.

La Marzocco Linea Mini Drip Tray

The La Marzocco Linea Mini R drip tray isn’t a mere accessory. Instead, this stainless steel drip tray does far more than catch errant spills. Its generous cup tray accommodates many shot glasses, providing ample space for workflow. It also has a recess where you can drop a brew-by-weight scale, almost flush with the grate for enhanced accuracy.

Another feature I love is how easy this drip tray is to clean. It signals its need for cleaning through a flashing light and an audible alert. It’s also built at a slight angle, ensuring efficient drainage. It’s also removable and dishwasher-safe, for easy cleaning. This thoughtful design reflects La Marzocco’s understanding of the prosumer machine market.

Water Reservoir

The La Marzocco Linea Mini water reservoir is one of those features that let me down. I don’t particularly appreciate that it’s located behind the drip tray. Still, once you get it out, it offers crystal-clear visibility. The food-grade plastic housing allows you to track water levels easily. And its generous 84.5-ounce (2.5-liter) capacity means fewer refills.

In its defense, the water tank has strong magnets for effortless removal and reattachment.

Personally, I would go with the whole hog and buy this machine’s La Marzocco Linea Mini plumb kit. Purchased separately, it converts the Linea Mini R to a plumb-in version. It has a clear armored drip tray draining hose and a braided hose for incoming water. Plus, you need all installation components for conversion. It’s a valuable addition to the Linea Mini R if you want to cut the hassle of constant refills.

La Marzocco App

The La Marzocco Linea Mini Home app transforms this espresso machine from a regular appliance into a brewing champion. Available for iOS and Android, it allows you to control and monitor your machine remotely.

The setup is straightforward. After downloading the app, you’ll connect your La Marzocco Linea Mini R to your home WiFi network via Bluetooth pairing. Once connected, you gain unprecedented control to:

  • Set daily on/off schedules

  • Adjust brew boiler and steam boiler temperatures

  • Configure pre-infusion settings

  • Monitor machine statuses

  • Program auto-backflushing cycles

  • Track maintenance schedules

  • Preheat the machine remotely

This app offers deeper insights for tech-savvy coffee lovers. Log brewing sessions, track shot parameters and share your favorite coffee recipes with an enthusiastic La Marzocco community.

Also, you can install firmware updates via the app. In an AI-emergent world obsessed with the Internet of Things, this is a nice feature to have.

La Marzocco Linea Mini: How to Use the Machine

Getting started with the Linea Mini R is exciting, yet I suspect, a nervous journey for novices. Begin by positioning the machine on a level surface near water and power sources capable of handling a 1600-watt load. Ensure you use a grounded electrical outlet.

Next, use test strips (included) to determine your water quality. Aim for 30-50 parts per million softness. In this regard, I recommend filling the water tank with reverse osmosis or filtered water. These coffee waters reduce the chances of limescale buildup. Alternatively, convert your machine to the plumb-in version using the La Marzocco plumb kit.

La Marzocco Linea Mini How to Use

Heating Up Your Machine

To prep your machine, press the power button on the bottom right. La Marzocco Linea Mini heat-up time is approximately 15-20 minutes. This allows the machine to reach full steam capacity and be ready to brew.

During this time, your Linea Mini R starts the pump. It also fills the boiler and stabilizes the boiler pressure at or above 1.5 bar. The built-in pressure gauge should help you track this process. Once your machine is ready, you’ll see the water (blue) and heating lights (red) turn solid.

To make things easy, many of this machine’s settings use the La Marzocco Home app. You should also note that unlike in the OG Linea Mini, this machine has easier pump pressure adjustment. A screwdriver-adjustable dial at the top of the machine is to thank for this. For purposes of this La Marzocco Linea Mini review (and especially if you’re new to espresso), I recommend leaving this pressure as is (9-bar).

Brewing Espresso

To me, the heart of great espresso lies in coffee preparation, and that means fresh coffee beans (roasted within 7-21 days). To begin:

  • Grind whole beans to an ultra-fine espresso grind size.

  • Dose your coffee into the portafilter: 7-9 grams (single shot) or 18-20 grams (double shot). If you like, distribute the grounds with a WDT tool.

  • You may use a single or double-spout attachment with your portafilter. If you’re feeling brave enough, why not go naked for tastier, more consistent espresso?

  • Then, tamp the grounds carefully to achieve an even puck surface.

  • Lock in your portafilter and place a shot glass (or two) on the cup tray. You may use pre-infusion settings at this stage. For most baristas, 3-5 seconds is ideal.

  • Slide the brew paddle to the left to pull shots and activate the digital shot timer.

  • You may use built-in features like the brew-by-weight mode (separate scale required) to help you achieve perfect extractions.

  • The machine will stop brewing once it senses the appropriate shot weight. If you’re not using the brew-by-weight mode, you may stop extractions manually by sliding the brew paddle back to the right.

  • Rinse and dry your portafilter before locking it in place ready for the next shot.

Steaming Milk

The Linea Mini R’s Cool-Touch steam wand is your ticket to creamy espresso drinks. To use it:

  • Position the wand below the milk surface and turn the dial counterclockwise to start frothing.

  • Heat the milk slowly to 145-165 degrees Fahrenheit (62-73 degrees Celsius). Unless you’re making cafe con leche, avoid heating your milk too high and too fast as it’ll scald.

  • Top your espresso with milk and enjoy!

And there you have it – the ins and outs of using this prosumer espresso machine. One thing I must stress for this La Marzocco Linea Mini R review is that mastering this beauty isn’t a one-time gig. Instead, it’s a continuous learning process.

Embrace each shot (even failed ones) as a lesson. Also, experiment with coffee beans, grind settings and machine settings. Finally, consider keeping a brew log (the La Marzocco Home app makes this super-easy). This will help you to track progress and evolve your espresso skills.

La Marzocco Linea Mini Maintenance

Your Linea Mini is a significant investment. As such, it demands thoughtful care. Start with water quality. Always use filtered or reverse osmosis water with 30-50 parts per million mineral content. This prevents internal limescale damage.

Careful maintenance is also key to preserving your investment. Regularly track critical indicators like group head temperature and boiler pressure. Also, ensure electrical and other connections remain dry.

Remember, it’s essential that your machine lives in a dust-free, low-humidity environment, away from direct sunlight. It’s also essential that you use a La Marzocco protective cover when not using your machine.

Before the first brew of the day, allow for a 15-20 minute warm-up. This isn’t a suggestion; it’s a must-do. Besides, you can use the app to do so remotely. Monthly, quarterly and annual inspections are also prudent defenses against potential problems. Stay vigilant for potential issues like:

  • Unusual brewing noises

  • Irregular extractions

  • Sudden water temperature changes

  • Inconsistent steam pressure

  • Visible leaks or condensation

While home maintenance is crucial, professional servicing is non-negotiable. I recommend registering your machine with the manufacturer to help them provide after-sales support. Also, schedule annual inspections with a certified La Marzocco technician. They’ll perform diagnostics, update firmware and catch issues you might have missed.

How to Clean the La Marzocco Linea Mini

Cleaning this dual boiler machine is a sacred ritual. I must stress in this La Marzocco Linea Mini R review that it’s not an afterthought. Instead, it’s the key to preserving your machine’s performance and coffee quality. Daily cleaning begins the moment you finish brewing and encompasses:

  • Purging and wiping the steam wand with a damp microfiber cloth to avoid milk residue buildup.

  • Emptying spent coffee grounds from your portafilter.

  • Rinsing the portafilter, baskets and plastic spout attachments with hot water before wiping them dry. Soak these weekly in a cleaning solution for a deeper clean.

  • Emptying, cleaning and drying the drain tray and knock box.

  • Wiping down the exterior with a clean cloth, paying special attention to the group head.

Backflushing is another cornerstone of your machine’s maintenance routine. It preserves your coffee’s quality by removing residue and oils from internal brew pathways. To backflush, fit your portafilter with the blind (backflush) basket and add some espresso machine cleaner. Lock the portafilter in place and activate the brew paddle for 10 seconds. Release pressure by leaving the brew paddle off for 10 seconds. Repeat this cycle five times, and backflush your machine every 4-6 weeks.

Monthly deep cleaning should involve more of a comprehensive inspection. You should disassemble group head screens and check gaskets. Also, examine all seals and connections to ensure they’re intact and, of course descale fully.

This is also your opportunity to catch potential issues before they become serious problems. As always, refer to your user manual and La Marzocco Linea Mini parts diagram for guidance.

La Marzocco Linea Mini vs Other Espresso Machines

La Marzocco Linea Mini vs Micra

La Marzocco Linea Micra

The Linea Mini R is a more traditional home machine but still bulkier than the Micra. When it comes to brewing power, both machines use dual boiler systems. This gives them enhanced thermal stability and precise temperature control.

However, the Linea Micra has slightly less brewing power. It boasts an 8.5-ounce (0.25-liter) brew boiler and 54.1-ounce (1.6-liter) steam boiler. Consequently, these feature differences translate to the price.

The Linea Mini R retails between $5,500-$6,500; the Micra comes in lower at $4,900-$5,500. Considering how to choose an espresso machine gets tricky when both are from the same brand. So, my recommendation for this La Marzocco Linea Mini review?

Opt for the Linea Micra if you’re working with less room and a smaller budget but refuse to compromise on espresso quality. Either way, you’re getting a piece of La Marzocco coffee excellence.

La Marzocco Linea Mini vs Rocket Appartamento

Rocket Appartamento Overview

How does the Linea Mini R espresso machine compare to another espresso heavyweight, the Rocket Appartamento?

The Linea Mini R epitomizes industrial aesthetics and clean lines. In contrast, the Rocket Appartamento takes a different approach. It boasts distinctive side panel circular cutouts. These have become an instant design signature.

Whereas the Linea Mini R speaks to serious coffee professionals, the Appartamento is more for Italian coffee and design fanatics. The company is guided by two Italian partners, after all.

Differences do abound when it comes to functionality. La Marzocco’s Linea Mini R operates with exceptional temperature stability on a dual boiler system. These boilers provide precise temperature control and professional-level steam power.

The Rocket Appartamento, while less sophisticated, is no slouch. It features a heat exchange boiler with a 1-8-liter capacity. This system also allows simultaneous brewing and steaming.

As for price, the Linea Mini R is much more expensive. Its retail price towers over the Rocket Appartamento’s guide price of $1,850-$2,250. Thus, the Appartamento appeals more to entry-level users. It still delivers good espresso but at a fraction of the price.

Choose the former if you’re a serious home barista willing to invest in perfection. Select the latter if you value a beautiful design and great espresso without breaking the bank.

La Marzocco Linea Mini vs Lelit Bianca

Lelit Bianca Feature

The Linea Mini R represents La Marzocco’s classic industrial aesthetic. Its robust stainless steel exterior is hardy enough to handle the rigors of a professional café. Compact yet commanding, it’s a statement piece for La Marzocco enthusiasts.

The Lelit Bianca, by contrast, boasts a more avant-garde Italian design. Its unique wood panel and more curvaceous profile are particularly notable. Where the Linea Mini R is all business, the Lelit Bianca is the epitome of sophisticated elegance.

Both machines boast dual boiler systems, flexibility with direct plumb and water reservoir options and a superior steam wand. However, the Lelit Bianca boasts next-level customization. Its flow profiling paddle allows baristas manual control over brewing pressure. The result is espresso with more balanced flavors, aroma and body. This is a feature the Linea Mini R doesn’t offer.

As mentioned, the Linea Mini retails at $5,500-$6,500. The Lelit Bianca tops this price range, coming in at $6,500-$7,500. In this regard, opt for the former if you prefer a more traditional, “set-it-and-forget it” commercial-style workflow. And the latter? It’s more for true espresso experimenters who want to push the boundaries of home brewing.
