Geimori GU63 Review: Can This Affordable Grinder Do It All?

Hi! My name is Arne. Having spent years working as a barista I'm now on a mission to bring more good coffee to the people. To that end, my team and I provide you with a broad knowledge base on the subject of coffee.

Clearly explained: Our review process

If you’ve checked out my guide to the best coffee grinders, you’ll know that manufacturers often like to claim that their products are suitable for all brew methods. In reality, though, this is rarely the case; a grinder usually does better at one end of the grind size spectrum than the other.

With that in mind, I’m always on the lookout for a true “all rounder” – a coffee grinder that’s great for both espresso and French press. In today’s Geimori GU63 review I’ll be discussing my experiences using a new grinder that promises excellent results no matter how you’re brewing your coffee.

And I simply have to start with a spoiler: the Geimori GU63 kind of blew my mind during testing. Not only that, it’s priced so reasonably that it should have manufacturers like Eureka and Baratza shaking in their boots! Keep reading my Geimori GU63 review to learn more about what this burr coffee grinder can do.

Note: Wirsh was kind enough to send me the Geimori GU63 to test for you. However, you can be sure I’ll provide you with an honest and unbiased review of the grinder.

Geimori GU63 Review Overview

From what I can gather, Geimori is a relatively new company that specializes in producing high-quality, budget-friendly coffee grinders. The Geimori GU63 Coffee Grinder is a new addition to the brand’s lineup and will set you back just $299.99. Now, while that’s no trivial amount of money to spend on a coffee grinder, it’s peanuts compared to what you’ll spend on more well-known models.

And so the inevitable question arises: given its low price point, can the Geimori GU63 compete with more established single-dose coffee grinders? I’ll get into the nitty gritty a little later, but for now you should know that the GU63 is most certainly the real deal. Upon unboxing the thing, I was surprised both by the grinder’s weight and its compact dimensions. Rising to just 12 inches (30 centimeters) and clocking in at 6.8 pounds (3.1 kilograms), the GU63 is small and solid. Plus, its sleek, minimalist design and durable aluminum construction will appeal to just about everyone.

Of course, it’s all very well for a grinder to look and feel good, but it also has to perform well. And as it happens, Geimori has loaded the GU63 with all the right components to do so. In saying this, I’m referring to the grinder’s huge 63mm conical burrs, ultra-low speed motor and plasma anti-static technology. Oh, and to top it all off, the Geimori GU63 has a true stepless grind adjustment mechanism to ensure absolute precision when you’re dialing in.

Trust me, I wouldn’t blame you if you’re reading this and thinking there has to be a catch. So, let’s dig into the GU63’s most notable features to see if we can find one!

Geimori GU63 Grinder Features

Build Quality & Design

As I already pointed out, the Geimori GU63 is a solid and compact grinder that really looks the part. I happen to love the simplicity of the GU63’s design – there are no frills here, just a 50-gram single-dose hopper up top, grind adjustment collar below and a start/stop button located on the base. Heck, even the hopper lid feels way more premium than it should for the price.

The GU63 doesn’t have a portafilter cradle, but it does come with a 70-gram-capacity magnetic dosing cup that snaps satisfyingly into place under the exit chute. The grinder also comes with a bellows attachment which is absolutely essential. I’ll discuss that in more detail later.

63mm Conical Burrs

Another standout feature of the Geimori GU63 Coffee Grinder is its 63mm burr set. Made from CNC-machined high-carbon steel, these 8-core conical burrs are absolutely huge, meaning you can expect much more even particle distribution than you’d get from a standard entry-level grinder.

I’ll talk about taste a little later, but for now I can say that I was flabbergasted by how well these burrs performed during my testing. And as you can see from my photos, the GU63 produced next to no fines when grinding for espresso.

Grind Settings

Adjusting the grind on the Geimori GU63 is as easy as pie. The large adjustment collar features markings for 85 grind settings, but in reality, there are an infinite number. That’s because the grinder has a fully stepless adjustment mechanism, so you can really go to town when it comes to making micro-adjustments.

During my testing, I spent a lot of time using the GU63 as an espresso grinder, and I was quickly able to dial in my shots to perfection. Plus, the adjustment collar has just the right amount of resistance to allow for smooth, controlled movement.

Motor

Aside from its awesome burr set, the key to the Geimori GU63’s success is its high-torque DC motor. Designed to spin at a mere 80 RPM, this impressive motor ensures minimal heat buildup as the burrs do their thing. And as I’m sure you already know, that means your precious beans will retain their delicate flavor during the grinding process.

What’s more, the low-RPM motor ensures an extremely quiet experience as the grinder is working. I expected this, but I was still surprised by how quiet the GU63 actually is. I measured around 64 decibels when the GU63 was grinding for espresso, and the quality of the noise was more of a soothing hum than an annoying screech.

Now, I didn’t test this theory, but I’m almost certain that you could use the Geimori GU63 in the morning without waking a sleeping baby!

Plasma Anti-Static Technology

It’s common practice for coffee grinder manufacturers to talk up their anti-static technology. After all, using a grinder that retains coffee grounds anywhere in its system is annoying and just plain messy.

Listen, I don’t claim to understand how anti-static technology works, but it’s something I pay close attention to when I’m testing a grinder. And I’m happy to report that the Geimori GU63 performs as advertised: I carefully weighed every dose before it went into the hopper and once it had passed into the catch cup. And the most I ever lost was around 0.1 grams.

Of course, it’s very important to note that the bellows attachment is essential for achieving this, but it’s still a very impressive number.

Accessories

As you already know, the Geimori GU63 comes with a dosing cup and a bellows attachment. The other accessories included with the grinder are a cleaning brush and a Ross Droplet Technique (RDT) sprayer.

The dosing cup fits 58mm portafilters nicely, but if you have a smaller portafilter, you’ll want to invest in a dosing collar. No big deal. I should note that although the grinder’s anti-static technology works like a dream, I did notice some static buildup in the catch cup, making it tricky to remove all the grounds. Then again, if you decide to use the RDT sprayer, you might not experience this problem at all.

The Geimori GU63 Grinder in Use

Seeing as the Geimori GU63 is such a simple and well-designed grinder, using the thing is pretty self explanatory. Once you’ve selected your desired grind setting, it’s simply a case of pulling out your coffee scale, weighing your beans then popping them into the hopper before pressing the start/stop button. Of course, I’m assuming you’ve remembered to put the dosing cup into position before doing all this!

As I’ve mentioned a couple of times in this Geimori GU63 review, you should always use the bellows attachment to purge the system. Just to make sure, I measured the amount of coffee that was retained without using the bellows, and it turned out to be around two grams. Oh, and one of the only faults I can find with the GU63 is that the bellows are somewhat flimsy and don’t attach perfectly to the hopper. So I recommend taking it easy as you’re pumping to avoid any mishaps.

Geimori GU63 Grinder Flavor Profiles

At this point in my Geimori GU63 review, you will have cottoned on to the fact that I absolutely love this grinder. Still, is it really suitable for all coffee brewing methods? Let’s take a quick look at how it performs across the coffee grind size spectrum.

Geimori GU63 Grinder Flavor Profiles

Espresso

I was truly impressed by the GU63’s espresso grinding capabilities. The grinder produces beautifully fluffy grounds with absolutely no clumping and minimal fines. During my test I used a blend of Central American coffees with a medium roast profile, and the Geimori GU63 did a superb job of highlighting the blend’s inherent sweetness and chocolate notes. My espresso was full-bodied, syrupy and complex, with an incredibly long finish.

Drip & Pour Over

While the Geimori GU63 still showcases impressive particle distribution in the middle of the grind size spectrum, I did notice more fines. That’s simply because of the conical burr geometry, but it will mean you’ll sacrifice some clarity when brewing light roast single origin beans. So, those looking for a dedicated grinder for pour-over might prefer a flat-burr grinder like the Fellow Ode. With that said, the GU63 did a great job grinding for Hario V60, Chemex and automatic drip during my test. All in all, the results were many levels above average, and I enjoyed several cups of balanced and satisfying coffee.

French Press & Cold Brew

At coarser settings I was fully prepared to find the GU63’s weak spot. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how well the grinder performed. Again, there were some fines when grinding for French press and cold brew, but next to no boulders. That’s particularly important for French press lovers looking for a super-even extraction.

Geimori GU63 Cleaning and Maintenance

As with any coffee grinder, it’s vital that you clean the GU63’s burrs on a regular basis. That is, if you want it to keep performing at its best.

Fortunately, doing so couldn’t be easier. To access the burrs, simply turn the collar all the way clockwise before removing it to expose the burr chamber. Then, you can lift out the top burr and clean it using the included brush. Once that’s done, I’d recommend brushing the bottom burr before vacuuming out the chamber.

Best of all, this straightforward design means you can put the thing back together in a jiffy and you won’t need to recalibrate the grinder at all.

Earlier in this Geimori GU63 review I wondered whether this coffee grinder was too good to be true. I mean, surely a grinder costing just $299.99 wouldn’t be able to compete with the best espresso grinders on the market, right? Well, I can only say that I wasn’t able to find a catch. I absolutely love the GU63 and it seems to have created a permanent place for itself in my kitchen.

Sure, the Geimori GU63 isn’t perfect, especially if you’re a pour-over fanatic. Still, it’s pretty darn close in my opinion. It’s rare to find a grinder that can do it all, let alone one that’s in the budget price bracket. Personally, I can’t wait to see what Geimori comes up with next!

Have you bought the Geimori GU63? Do you love it as much as I do? Feel free to leave a comment!
