Cosori Juni Review: Coffee and a Show!

If you’re a regular Coffeeness reader, you’ll know how much I love manual brewing. Preparing pour-over coffee in the morning is like meditation for me, and I like to geek out with new recipes and specialty coffee beans. With that said, I’m always on the lookout for new and exciting automatic pour-over coffee machines. Hence, this Cosori Juni review.

In the past, I’ve been very impressed by machines like the Technivorm Moccamaster and Ratio Six. However, the recently released Cosori Juni promises something way more advanced. In fact, I’ve never seen anything like this SCA-certified automatic pour-over coffee maker.

As it happens, I’ve spent the past few weeks putting the Cosori Juni through its paces, and I’m excited to tell you all about my experience. Oh, and I should tell you that Cosori sent me the Juni to test out. But as always, you can expect an honest and unbiased review of the machine.

Cosori Juni Review Overview

Prior to receiving the Juni, I only knew about Cosori because I’d reviewed the manufacturer’s gooseneck kettle. And as far as I know, the Juni represents Cosori’s first foray into the drip coffee maker market. Well, you certainly can’t accuse these guys of doing things by halves – the Cosori Juni might well be the most technologically advanced coffee maker to date.

Costing $299.99, the Juni isn’t cheap, but then again, it’s far from a standard-issue coffee machine. Rather, the Cosori Juni is a highly advanced pour-over machine that’s been designed to rule out human error. I’m sure you won’t be surprised to hear that the Juni comes with a sophisticated app. After all, that’s kind of to be expected these days. However, one thing that sets the machine apart is its AI feature, wherein the Juni learns your preferences over time and makes suggestions based on user-generated information. In other words, the Cosori Juni feels very much like the coffee maker of the future.

As I already mentioned, the Cosori Juni is an SCA-certified home brewer, meaning it had to go through a rigorous set of tests to ensure it produces coffee of exceptional quality. What’s more, the Juni comes with two brew baskets – a cone-shaped Hario V60-style dripper and a more traditional flat-bottomed basket. This means you can brew a variety of sizes, ranging from a single cup to an entire 51-ounce ( 1.5-liter) carafe. And as we’ll see later in this Cosori Juni review, you’re able to play around with just about any brewing parameter you can think of.

How Does the Cosori Juni Work?

Before going any further, I feel like I should give you a clearer idea of how the Cosori Juni works. After all, this thing really puts on a show.

The biggest difference between the Juni and other coffee makers is the lack of a fixed shower head. Rather, the Juni is equipped with a retractable arm, which emerges from the brew head to dispense a single stream of water. Meanwhile, a motor spins the brew basket underneath. This system is meant to replicate complex pouring patterns while evenly soaking the bed of ground coffee. That’s not all though – the Cosori Juni levels the bed of ground coffee by “vibrating” the brew basket. It’s loud and rather alarming, but it works really well!

Other thoughtful features include smart basket detection and pre-wetting of the coffee filter. You can operate the Juni via a touchscreen interface on the base or Cosri’s VeSync app, but I’d say the latter option will end up being more popular. That’s because the app opens up a world of possibilities while the machine’s control panel offers limited options for brewing.

Cosori Juni Smart Coffee Maker Features

Now that you have a clearer idea of what this futuristic coffee maker is all about, let’s continue my Cosori Juni review by taking a closer look at the machine’s notable features.

Materials and Design

I can’t say that the Cosori Juni is the most beautiful coffee maker I’ve ever seen, but it does look rather impressive.

Featuring an expansive base with a large touchscreen interface, one side of the Juni is taken up by the brewing tower. Inside, there’s a super-efficient 1,500-watt pass-though heater, which enables high levels of temperature control. The retractable brew arm extends from the top of the tower, below which sits the rotating base. The other side of the base is occupied by a 51-ounce (1.5-liter) removable water reservoir.

During my testing, I appreciated how well each brew basket sits on the rotating base, as well as the drip stop feature, which keeps things nice and clean. However, I have to say that the water tank feels rather flimsy, seeing as it’s made of low-quality plastic. In fact, the entire machine is made from plastic, although that does keep the Juni’s price down.

My only other concern is that the Cosori Juni relies heavily on moving parts and motors. Sure, this is a really cool idea, and it works very well. Still, I have to wonder about the machine’s longevity. After all, if a motor were to fail, it seems like the Juni would be toast.

User Interface & App

As I mentioned earlier, the machine has a good-sized touchscreen user interface. From here you can access preset recipes and make a few adjustments to your brewing parameters.

However, if you really want to unlock the Cosori Juni’s full potential, you’ll have to use the app. Besides, for some reason, the manufacturer decided to go with a kind of retro dot matrix vibe when designing the machine’s controls. It’s a cute touch, but it makes navigating the menus rather confusing.

Fortunately, the VeSync app is sensational. Seriously, I’m not always a fan of using an app to control a coffee maker, but I had a blast with the Cosori Juni. As well as offering access to a bunch of recipes, the app allows you to make adjustments to everything from water flow rate in grams per second to pouring geometry. Heck, you can even tweak bloom times and set the machine to “agitate” the bed of coffee at different times.

Best of all, you can share your own personal recipes and access a library of those from other users. Ultimately, the VeSync app is incredibly sophisticated and will likely get better and better over time.

Carafe

Seeing as the Cosori Juni is both a single-serve coffee maker and a batch brewer, it comes with a fairly standard glass carafe. There’s no keep-warm function on offer, which is a good thing in my opinion. And with that in mind, I would have preferred to see a thermal carafe in the box. As it happens, you can buy the “Stainless Steel” Juni, which comes with an insulated carafe. However, you’ll have to shell out an extra 50 bucks for this version.

Anyway, the glass carafe is fine apart from the fact that it’s very hard to clean; I tried getting in there with a long brush and still found it hard to get the thing sparkling.

On a brighter note, the Juni comes with a nifty removable shelf for when you’re brewing single cups of coffee. It attaches to the brew tower and even has a drip tray.

Brew Baskets

As you already know, the Cosori Juni offers two ways to brew. There’s a Hario V60-style dripper for making smaller servings of coffee and a flat-bottomed basket for larger batches. Plus, the machine automatically detects which basket you’ve inserted.

While the plastic baskets are fine, I would have liked to have been able to use my porcelain V60 dripper with the coffee maker. However, seeing as the Cosori baskets have been designed to work with the drip stop feature, that wasn’t possible.

The machine does come with a pack of paper filters for each basket and there’s also a coffee scoop in the box. To be honest, I found it rather strange that the Juni is so advanced and yet the user manual refers to the amount of scoops you should use when making coffee. However, once you get into the app, you’ll find that the recipes direct you to weigh coffee in grams.

The Cosori Juni in Use

If you’ve made it this far into my Cosori juni review, you’re probably wondering whether or not the thing can actually make good coffee. Well, allow me to tell you that the Juni is capable of making exceptional pour-over coffee, and you’ll barely need to lift a finger.

Of course, to get the best results you’ll need to use a good burr coffee grinder and a coffee scale. And once you’ve weighed and ground your coffee then added it to the filter, you can sit back and watch the Juni as it does its thing.

When I tested the Cosori Juni, I started by using the control panel and brewing up coffee using the three preset recipes. To be honest, the single-cup results were fine, but far from mind-blowing. Still, the Gold Cup recipe definitely delivered in terms of body, complexity and temperature.

Once I set up the app and started using it to brew coffee, everything changed. Seeing as I was using a light-roast single origin Ethiopian coffee, I opted to use the preset recipe for African or American origin beans. And I have to say that the Juni knocked it out of the park: my cup of coffee was clean, multi-faceted and bursting with notes of dark chocolate and lemon peel.

Over the next few days, I went deeper down the rabbit hole, exploring the seemingly endless user-submitted recipes in the VeSync app’s “Recipe Plaza” as well as experimenting with my own creations. I have to say the Cosori Juni was a joy to use, and I had great fun. And although it’s hard for me to admit, the Juni consistently produced better pour-over coffee than I can make by hand!

Cosori Juni Cleaning

You’ll be happy to learn that cleaning the Cosori Juni won’t take up much of your time. Of course, I’d highly recommend cleaning the brew baskets, carafe and water tank with mild dish soap before using the machine for the first time.

Even though all removable parts are made of plastic, I wouldn’t put anything in the dishwasher. Instead, simply rinse off the brew baskets after each use. Oh, and you can use a damp cloth to take care of any splashes or stains that show up on the machine’s exterior.

I’m sure you’ll be using fresh, filtered water in the Juni’s reservoir, but you’ll still need to descale the machine every once in a while. Fortunately, the Cosori Juni will remind you when it’s time to run a descaling cycle. I won’t bore you with the details of how to perform this cleaning task – you’ll find all the information you need in the user manual.

Cosori Juni vs Fellow Aiden

The Fellow Aiden Precision Coffee Maker is easily one of the best automatic pour-over coffee makers I’ve ever used. Retailing for $399.95, the Aiden is a good deal more expensive than the Cosori Juni, but you definitely get what you pay for.

When I tested the Fellow Aiden, I was truly impressed by this outstanding coffee maker’s abilities. Like the Cosori Juni, the Fellow Aiden offers a stunning amount of control over your brew, via an intimidating amount of adjustable parameters. But if you want to keep things simple, you’re able to use Bypass Mode and use the machine like a regular coffee maker. While the Fellow Aiden can’t compete with the Juni’s mechanized showboating, it’s a very impressive coffee maker. I appreciated its adjustable shower head as well as its thermal carafe and solid construction. What’s more, the Aiden’s intuitive digital control panel makes it easy to navigate the many menus and settings.

Overall, both of these coffee makers will appeal to pour-over aficionados, and both are really fun to use. I can’t really say that one is better than the other, but my concerns about the Juni’s longevity might persuade me to spend a little more on the Aiden.

Having reached the end of my Cosori Juni review, I can confidently say that this is one of the best coffee makers I’ve ever used. Not only does the Juni make it easy to prepare pour-over coffee, it does so with the utmost consistency.

With that in mind, the Cosori Juni will certainly appeal to coffee nerds who want to experiment with every single aspect of their brew. What’s more, I could see the Juni appealing to more casual pour-over enthusiasts who don’t have time to carefully pour from a gooseneck kettle each morning.

From what I’ve heard, Cosori plans on releasing a version of the Juni with direct plumbing. This would be a smart move, in my opinion, seeing as the Juni could be a valuable addition to any busy cafe’s slow bar setup. For now though, the Cosori Juni is entering the home coffee maker market as a very strong competitor for machines like the xBloom Studio and Fellow Aiden. I’d say other manufacturers may be more than a little concerned!
