Eureka Mignon Silenzio Review: Enjoy the Silence!

I know that many of you are thinking of upgrading to a more espresso-focused grinder, hence this Eureka Mignon Silenzio review. And while the Silenzio is perfectly capable of grinding for other brewing methods, it’s definitely going to appeal more to home baristas.

Oh, and before going any further I should point out that this burr coffee grinder represents superb value for money. Seriously, given how well the Eureka Mignon Silenzio performs, it’s a total steal at $N/A.

Anyway, now that I’ve whet your appetite, let’s jump right into my Eureka Mignon Silenzio review!

Eureka Mignon Silenzio Review Overview

If you’re a huge espresso nerd like me, you’ll already be familiar with Eureka. Based in Florence, Italy, these guys have been pumping out exceptional coffee grinders for almost a hundred years. What’s more, each and every Eureka grinder is assembled by hand in Italy, so you know you’re getting something special.

While you can definitely find Eureka models costing an arm and a leg, the manufacturer’s Mignon grinders are all fairly affordable. I wouldn’t call them budget-friendly or anything, but they’re reasonably priced for what you get. Take the Eureka Mignon Zero, for example, which topped out my list of the best single dose grinders.

As its name suggests, the Eureka Mignon Silenzio has been designed to be one of the quietest grinders on the block. I’ll get into the specifics of how loud the Silenzio is a little later. Still, you should know that this could be the grinder that won’t wake the baby in the morning as you’re prepping your first espresso shot of the day.

As for my first impressions of the Eureka Mignon Silenzio, I think we can all agree that this is a very attractive coffee grinder. Not that I’m surprised – the Italians never fail to add a healthy dose of form when making something functional. Anyway, this compact beauty is certainly going to look great sitting next to your home espresso machine.

Eureka Mignon Silenzio Features

Now that we’ve got a good idea of what we’re dealing with, let’s continue this Eureka Mignon Silenzio review by taking a closer look at its many exciting features.

Size and Design

Clocking in at just under 14 inches (36 centimeters), the Silenzio is going to slot nicely into your coffee bar setup, even if you’ve got limited space.

That’s not to say it’ll fade into the background, though; I mean, who could ignore its unique boxy silhouette? Personally, I just love the way this coffee grinder looks – its sleek, stylish design really floats my boat!

Don’t think for a minute that the Eureka Mignon Silenzio sacrifices build quality for a pretty face. In fact, this burr grinder is built like a tank. Thanks to its durable metal housing and high-quality components, you can expect the Silenzio to last for a very long time.

Of course, the manufacturer did have to cut a few corners to keep costs down. From what I can gather, the plastic bean hopper isn’t the most durable you’ll find, and the portafilter holder could be better.

User Interface

Unlike the Eureka Mignon Specialita, with its digital timer and touchscreen controls, the Silenzio features a more analog user interface. There’s still a timer function for dosing, but it takes the form of a small manual dial on the side of the grinder.

To be honest, I’m never a fan of timer functions on grinders, and this one is particularly annoying. Heck, there isn’t even any point of reference, so you’re just taking a shot in the dark when moving the dial.

Fortunately, there’s a button for switching between timer and manual mode. So, I’d recommend grabbing your coffee scale and using the Silenzio as a single doser.

Bean Hopper

The Eureka Mignon Silenzio’s plastic bean hopper has a 300-gram capacity, which is great if you always use the same coffee beans and manage to master the timer function. That said, there is a handy gate for closing the hopper if you want to switch out beans at any time.

Still, as I already mentioned, I’d recommend using the Silenzio as a single dose grinder. You can simply weigh out your ideal dose, add beans to the hopper and grind ’em for each shot of espresso.

Even better, you can get hold of a single dose hopper for just $22.99. And thanks to this type of hopper’s bellows-style design, you can get close to zero retention for each grind cycle.

Stainless Steel Flat Burrs

While the Eureka Mignon Silenzio has flat burrs made from hardened stainless steel, they are on the smaller side at 50 millimeters. With that said, the Silenzio grinds at around 1350 rpm, meaning the grinder quickly pumps out coffee grounds with minimal heat transfer.

From what I can gather, the Eureka Mignon Silenzio produces extremely uniform and fluffy grounds for espresso, although consistency tends to decrease at medium settings. Then again, that’s something you’ll encounter with lots of coffee grinders, especially those intended primarily for espresso.

Grind Settings

The Eureka Mignon Silenzio’s grind adjustment system is pretty unique. Rather than moving the collar to select your grind size, there’s a prominent dial next to the bean hopper. This is Eureka’s Stepless Micrometric Regulation System, which it is understandably proud of.

By turning the dial you can make stepless micro-adjustments to the grind size, making the Silenzio ideal for espresso preparation. After all, there’s practically no limit to the amount of tiny changes you can make when you’re fine-tuning your shots.

With that said, using this grinder for both espresso and drip coffee could be kind of a hassle seeing as you’ll have to turn the dial far out of the espresso range. And getting back could end up being rather frustrating.

Hands-Free Fork

As we’ve already established, the Eureka Mignon Silenzio is primarily meant as an on-demand espresso grinder. That’s why you won’t find a catch cup included with your purchase.

Instead, the Silenzio comes with a hands-free fork, otherwise known as a portafilter cradle. From what I can tell, the fork is ideal if you have a 58mm portafilter – you can slot it into place and fluffy grinds will tumble into the filter basket.

However, if you have a 54mm portafilter – like the one supplied with most Breville espresso machines – you’ll have to keep hold of it. What’s more, to avoid spillage you’ll likely want to use a dosing cup or dosing funnel with a smaller portafilter.

ACE System

Thanks to its Anti-Clump and Electrostatic (ACE) system, the Eureka Mignon Silenzio is remarkably efficient and consistent. In fact, the manufacturer has redesigned the grinder’s chute, grind path and clump crusher, so the Silenzio has close to zero grounds retention. That’s why I recommend the Eureka Mignon as a single dose espresso grinder – close to everything you put in at the top falls out of the chute into your portafilter.

How to Use the Eureka Mignon Silenzio

The Eureka Mignon Silenzio couldn’t be easier to set up out of the box. However, I’d recommend rinsing the bean hopper before using it for the first time to remove any factory dust and that new plastic smell. Oh, and make sure it’s completely dry before putting beans in there.

If you plan on using the timer function, load the hopper with coffee beans and engage the timer function using the button on the side of the grinder. Once that’s done you’ll need to figure out your ideal dose via the timer dial. And remember that you’ll have to adjust the timer with every grind change you make.

To start grinding, place your portafilter under the grounds chute and use it to press the contact button. In timer mode you just press once, but if you’re in manual mode you’ll need to hold it down.

How Loud Is the Eureka Mignon Silenzio?

In order to make the Eureka Mignon Silenzio as quiet as possible, the manufacturer has encased the motor in sound-dampening material. What’s more, there are rubber components within the durable metal housing to keep noise levels to a minimum.

So, does the Silenzio live up to its name in terms of quiet grinding? Well, during operation you can expect the grinder to produce around 70 decibels, making it substantially quieter than other espresso grinders. For reference, the Breville Smart Grinder Pro consistently produced around 80 decibels during my review.

Thanks to Eureka’s ACE system, you won’t experience much static buildup during operation, meaning there won’t be any mess to clean up. However, I’d recommend brushing out the grinds chute every few cycles, just to make sure. It’s also a good idea to brush off the burrs on a regular basis – I’d say once every couple of weeks.

Fortunately, accessing the flat burrs is as easy as removing a few screws. You can then remove the top burr and brush it off. I also find that a vacuum is the very best way to clean out the fixed bottom burr and grinding chamber.

Incidentally, thanks to the fact that this electric grinder uses a bottom burr adjust system, you won’t lose your grind setting when you remove the upper burr for cleaning.

Eureka Mignon Silenzio vs DF64 Grinder

The DF64 II Grinder has taken the coffee world by storm, thanks to its high-quality build, superb performance and reasonable price tag. In fact, at just $399.00, this single dose coffee grinder is almost in the budget category.

I’ll admit to having been blown away by the DF64 during my review. For starters, this grinder is equipped with 64mm flat burrs. Plus, you can easily upgrade to super fancy burrs if you want. What’s more, the Gen 2 DF64 comes with an array of thoughtful upgrades including a redesigned chute and a plasma generator.

End result? The DF64 II offers close to zero grind retention and supremely uniform and fluffy ground coffee for espresso. While the DF64 might not be as quiet as the Silenzio, it can really deliver the goods and offers even better value for money.

Having reached the end of my Eureka Mignon Silenzio review, I can confidently recommend the thing to any home barista. Whether you’re just starting out or thinking of upgrading, the Silenzio delivers on all its promises.

Ultimately, this is a no-frills espresso grinder that offers supreme grind consistency, low retention and very quiet operation. Sure, the timer function could be better, but that’s not the end of the world. After all, you can just ignore it altogether and rely on your coffee scale.
