I'll admit that I was on the fence about whether or not to write this Gevi 4 in 1 review. Don't get me wrong, we're looking at a pretty incredible coffee maker here. I just wonder whether it'll be of interest to anyone but the nerdiest of coffee geeks. With that said, this particular coffee nerd is very excited to take a closer look!

In my drip coffee maker guide 2024 you’ll find quite a few machines claiming to offer pour over-style coffee. In fact, some of them do a really good job. However, the Gevi 4 in 1 Smart Pour-Over Coffee Machine takes things to a whole new level. So, is this coffee maker worth $719.99? Let’s find out!

Gevi 4 in 1 Review Overview

Coffee machines with built-in grinders are nothing new. In fact, you’ll find plenty of great examples in my coffee maker with grinder guide 2024. So, what’s all the fuss about with the Gevi 4 in 1? I’m glad you asked! Well, this futuristic-looking piece of kit is a fully functional pour over machine that takes precision brewing to the next level.

The Gevi 4 in 1 can be programmed with an incredible degree of accuracy to replicate sophisticated pour over techniques. Seriously, you can play with water temperature, flow rate, bloom time and loads more. And I haven’t even got to the built-in scale or flat burr grinder yet! Anyway, I’m sure you can sense my excitement – the Gevi 4 in 1 is like no other coffee maker I’ve seen.

So who is this pour over machine for? That’s the question I’ll be grappling with throughout my Gevi 4 in 1 review. Given the machine’s substantial price tag, I’d be surprised if most casual coffee drinkers would be interested. Still, we are looking at a coffee grinder, scale, kettle and brewer rolled into one. With that in mind, perhaps the price tag isn’t quite so steep after all.

Gevi 4 in 1 First Impressions

All the components of the Gevi 4-in-1.

I already mentioned that the Gevi 4 in 1 has a futuristic vibe. I happen to love the way this pour over coffee machine looks. I’m a huge fan of the illuminated water level window – there’s just something about that cool blue light that floats my boat. Plus, the overall design lends the machine a classy, streamlined appearance. Thanks to its brushed aluminum construction, the Gevi not only looks sleek, it feels nice and sturdy too.

For as much as there is going on, the Gevi actually has a pretty small footprint. On one side there’s a distinctive cylindrical grinder with the bean hopper above. Below that there’s a grinding/brewing platform with a scale to the rear. The other side of the machine is taken up by the water tank and brewing unit, which has the control panel on top.

All in all, my first impressions of the Gevi 4 in 1 are of an incredibly well-conceived machine. I guess it’s little wonder the Gevi won a Red Dot Design Award in 2021.

Gevi 4 in 1 Features

Now that I’ve expressed my enthusiasm for how the machine looks, let’s continue this Gevi 4 in 1 review by delving into its many impressive features.

Rotating Spouts

Time to start getting into the nitty gritty of how this machine actually works. Key to the Gevi’s success as a pour over machine is its rotating spout system.

If you have any experience preparing pour over coffee, you’ll know that how you pour matters as much as anything. An even extraction demands a slow, smooth and consistent circular pouring motion that evenly soaks the bed of ground coffee.

The Gevi 4 in 1 replicates this with three jet spouts that rotate 360 degrees. What’s more, you’re able to fully control the rotation speed, water flow rate and even the height of your pour. Seriously, how cool is that!

Control Panel

The Gevi 4-in-1 control panel.

I really can’t overstate how impressed I am by the Gevi 4 in 1 user interface. To be honest, the Gevi’s control panel is more sophisticated than what you’ll see on many super automatic espresso machines.

The touchscreen interface is conveniently located on top of the brew group, and it’s from here that you’ll control all functions. I won’t go into detail about all the customizable settings you have access to; suffice to say you can keep things fairly simple or go really deep.

Although the touchscreen display is fairly small, it’s clear and easy to navigate. From what I’ve seen, the responsiveness is excellent too.

Grinder

The Gevi 4-in-1 grinding.

No matter how well designed and sophisticated a machine like this may be, if its grinder isn’t up to the task there’s just no point. Fortunately, the Gevi 4 in 1 really delivers in this regard. The manufacturer makes a big deal out of this grinder in its promotional material and for good reason.

The 60 millimeter stainless steel flat burrs are mounted vertically, which means there’s next to no retention when grinding. What’s more, the grinder is equipped with a whopping 51 adjustment settings, accessed via a large dial on the front of the machine.

What’s especially cool is that the grinder is completely separate from the brewer, so you’re not locked into using it solely with the 4 in 1. That’s not always the case with grind and brew coffee makers.

Bean Hopper

Located above the grinder, the Gevi’s bean hopper might look a bit small. However, this hopper hasn’t been designed with the idea of dumping a bag of beans in and walking away. Rather, the Gevi 4 in 1 encourages you to add precise amounts of beans to the hopper each time you prepare coffee. That’s where the coffee scale comes in.

Scale

In my kitchen, the coffee scale takes pride of place. Seriously, achieving consistent results from any preparation method demands that you weigh your coffee, so a good scale is vital. Of course, Gevi knows this, which is why the 4 in 1 pour over machine features an integrated scale.

You can monitor the scale via the touchscreen display, and from what I’ve seen it’s incredibly accurate to 0.1 grams. A nice touch is the addition of an aluminum scale lid which doubles as a container for measuring beans.

Water Tank

Earlier in this Gevi 4 in 1 review I mentioned the softly illuminated water tank window and how much I love it. I’m just a sucker for thoughtful design features like that I guess. Anyway, the water tank itself is made from stainless steel, which is always a good sign. Plus the powerful 1000 watt heating system ensures the machine will be ready to roll in no time.

As I mentioned earlier, the Gevi 4 in 1 allows you to adjust water temperature from 176 to 210 degrees Fahrenheit (88 to 99 degrees Celsius), which is amazing. However, the water tank also doubles as a kettle and can be used independently of the brewer.

From the control panel you can select the boil water function, which is an awesome option to have. In fact, from what I’ve seen, you could get rid of your gooseneck kettle, scale, grinder and coffee maker and just own the Gevi!

Carafe

Closeup of the Gevi 4-in1 carafe.

The Gevi 4 in 1 pour over coffee machine comes with a borosilicate glass carafe. If the carafe reminds you of a Chemex coffeemaker, that’s because it’s almost identical. I’m certainly not complaining – I’m all for having more equipment in my kitchen that looks like it should be in a science lab!

The only thing I’m not sure about is the carafe’s silicone sleeve. Sure, it’s going to protect your hands from getting burned. Still, couldn’t the manufacturer have made it a little less … ugly? I mean we’ve seen that Gevi’s design department knows how to hit a home run, so what the heck happened here?!

Filters

You’ll get a choice of two filters with the Gevi 4 in 1. For starters there’s a conical stainless steel mesh filter. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend using this for pour over – you won’t get the complex and clean results you’re after. Fortunately, the other option is a dripper reminiscent of the Hario V60. You’ll also get some paper coffee filters to use with this.

Compatibility

Speaking of filters, the Gevi 4 in 1 pour over coffee machine is compatible with a wide range of brewers. You can use the Gevi with a Chemex, Kalita Wave, Hario V60 and just about any other manual dripper you can imagine. Plus, as I mentioned earlier, the water spouts are height adjustable. That’s only going to make your life a lot easier when you’re switching between drippers.

How to Use the Gevi 4 in 1

Adjusting the grind on the Gevi 4-in-1.

I’m not going to sugarcoat it: using the Gevi 4 in 1 pour over coffee machine involves a substantial learning curve. With that said, if you’re already a pour over aficionado, programming brew ratios, bloom times and brew speeds will be fairly straightforward. As I mentioned earlier in my Gevi 4 in 1 review, navigating the user interface is very intuitive, so experts will be all set.

Incidentally, the Gevi does have an automatic mode, wherein you’ll only have to press a couple of buttons. However, I don’t imagine those attracted to this machine will pay any attention to that. Remember, diving deep into every aspect of the pour over process is what this machine is all about!

I’m not going to give you a pour over masterclass in this Gevi 4 in 1 review. Still, here’s a quick rundown of how to use the machine:

  1. Start by adding cold, filtered water to the reservoir. Next, select Pour Coffee then My Recipe from the menu. The machine will give you the option to preheat the water, which will save time during brewing.

  2. Follow the onscreen instructions which will advise you to weigh then grind your coffee beans. Once that’s done, you’ll input the weight and grind size.

  3. Next, you’ll be asked to input your desired brew ratio and water temperature

  4. Now you’ll get to design your new recipe. The machine will ask you to input the amount of water used, brew speed, spin speed, pause time and bloom time. You can create up to 10 steps like this.

  5. Now you’re ready to brew. The machine will finish heating the water, then start the first brewing step. You’ll see a progress diagram on the screen which displays brewing data. Cool!

  6. Once the coffee is ready, you’ll have the option to name and save your recipe for next time.

Barista Mode

Once you’ve gotten a feel for the machine, Barista Mode is where things get really exciting. Here, you can control the brewing process in real time, using the progress bar and digital graphs to dial in your recipe. The possibilities are literally endless when you’re using Barista Mode, and the machine will remember everything that happened so you can save your masterpiece!

Gevi 4 in 1 Cleaning

Cleaning the burrs on the Gevi 4-in-1.

When it comes to cleaning and descaling, there really isn’t much to worry about. I’d recommend keeping a damp cloth handy to wipe down the machine’s exterior. As for the glass carafe, a little warm water and mild detergent will go a long way.

The Gevi’s grinder is remarkably easy to keep clean. The grind chamber is easy to access from the front, and the flat burrs can be removed. What’s more, Gevi includes a nifty little brush for taking care of coffee residue that may have  built up on the burrs.

Seeing as the Gevi 4 in 1 doesn’t have a water filter, I’d recommend descaling the thing on a regular basis. There’s a descaling mode to make this process easy. I’d say your best bet is to use a citric acid descaler for getting the job done.

Gevi 4 in 1 vs Others

To be honest, it’s hard to find anything to compare with the Gevi 4 in 1 pour over machine. As I already mentioned, I’ve never come across anything like it before. Still, there are a couple of alternatives out there that are worth considering. So, let’s continue my Gevi 4 in 1 review by looking at the competition.

Gevi 4 in 1 vs Breville Precision Brewer

Arne drinking coffee from the Breville Precision Brewer.

The Breville Precision Brewer has been one of my favorite coffee makers for a while now. You won’t find a built-in grinder or coffee scale on this machine. However, its $299.95 price tag represents really good value for money.

The Precision Brewer has six unique brew modes and has been Gold Cup certified by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA). Plus, you’re able to customize your brew by adjusting flow rate, temperature and bloom time. During my testing, I was consistently impressed by this machine, and found that it produced a clean, balanced extraction.

Gevi 4 in 1 vs Chemex Ottomatic

There’s no doubt that the Chemex is a classic. In fact, I’d say it’s one of my all-time favorite ways to make coffee. It doesn’t hurt that the Chemex is a thing of beauty, either.

Costing $349.99, the Chemex Ottomatic Coffeemaker Set includes a 6-cup Chemex coffee maker, filters and the Chemex Ottomatic 2.0 brewer. While you can’t program the Ottomatic, it’s been calibrated to produce the ideal pre infusion and contact time between water and ground coffee. Featuring a special sprayhead, the Ottomatic provides a staged brew cycle to facilitate a super even extraction.
