Overview: Melitta Vision Coffee Maker Review

Melitta is a trusted coffee brand worldwide. Since 1908, it has made a name for itself with high-quality coffee, appliances and accessories. With the Melitta Vision Luxe 12-Cup Drip Coffee Maker, Melitta aims to simplify everyday brewing.

So, what makes this drip coffee maker noteworthy? For one, it’s fully automatic. Secondly, it stands out for its adaptable 180-degree swivel touch-control panel. This isn’t a gimmick. Rather, it’s a game-changer for kitchen organization. It’s refreshing to see a manufacturer considering real-world kitchen constraints. But then again, this German brand is famous for its high-performance coffee machines, like the Melitta Caffeo Solo and the Melitta SENZ V, to name a few.

Melitta Vision Coffee Maker Overview

When it comes to the control panel, intuitive, responsive action is the name of the game. The interface is chock full of advanced features without feeling cluttered. Likewise, the dual heating system is super impressive.

Most large-capacity coffee makers use a single heating element for brewing and keeping coffee warm. This often results in under-temperature brewing or burnt-tasting brewed coffee. By separating these heating elements, the Vision ensures optimal brewing temperature, while reducing the risk of burnt-tasting carafe coffee.

This coffee maker’s 12-cup capacity is generous without being excessive. Speaking of which, the removable glass carafe deserves special mention. It has BPA-free (non-toxic) construction, well-balanced pour, perfect ergonomics and a sleek aesthetic. All these elements more than match this machine’s elegant and modern design.

While it’s not the cheapest option in its class, the Vision more than justifies its $152.15 price point. To me, it successfully bridges the gap between form and function.

Indeed, the Vision is a rare find — aesthetically pleasing and genuinely design-innovative. And while there’s room for minor improvements, it seems a solid choice for everyday drip coffee.

Melitta Vision Features

There are so many features that make this drip coffee maker awesome. While some of these are out of sight, others are readily noticeable. Let’s take a closer look in this Melitta Vision Coffee Maker review.

Size and Design

Melitta Vision Coffee Maker Size and Design

The Vision is Melitta’s stunning tribute to style-conscious coffee lovers. Standing at a commanding 15 inches (38 centimeters) tall, this drip coffee machine, with stainless steel, glass and plastic components, is a masterclass in thoughtful design.

Its centerpiece, a luxurious faux marble panel, elegantly links the dual heating system. In addition, a rotating touch control panel, speaks to a harmonious blend of form and function.

A must-mention in this Melitta Vision Coffee Maker review is the illuminated water tank. It glows red during brewing, adding an sophisticated ambience to your morning coffee ritual.

So, too, the removable carafe and filter insert, which promote everyday practicality. It’s these small but thoughtful details that make this coffee maker not only stunning to look at, but also easy to use.

User Interface

Melitta Vision Coffee Maker User Interface

The Vision’s 180-degree swivel LED display and control panel stands out as a masterpiece of intuitive design. Its digital interface houses the clock, which controls other essential functions. Chief among these are the adjustable coffee strength, keep-warm, wake-time and cleaning settings.

I especially love the programmable “Wake-Time” feature. It conveniently allows you to program your brew for later, ensuring fresh coffee whenever you want it. Useful, too, is the automated descaling reminder. Not only does it help you maintain optimal coffee flavor, it also prompts cleaning for timely maintenance.

This thoughtfully designed control panel exemplifies why the Melitta Vision rises head and shoulders above similar drip coffee makers.

Adjustable Coffee Strength

This coffee maker’s adjustable brew strength setting emerges as a standout feature. Far from being a novelty, this versatile function adapts to your daily coffee rituals.

The “Normal” setting delivers a reliable cup for your weekday morning routine. And for weekend indulgence, choose the “Bold” mode, which reduces water content to intensify your coffee’s character.

This latter brew setting particularly shines with medium-to-dark roasts. It coaxes out complex, rich flavors that drip coffee enthusiasts will appreciate. As such, the Melitta Vision elevates even the simplest brewing choices into something truly special.

Illuminated Water Tank

Now onto the star of this show: The Melitta Vision’s illuminated water tank. It’s pure morning theater. Boasting a generous 96-ounce (2.84-liter) capacity, it transforms routine brewing into a captivating display.

As hot water ascends through the transparent LED-lit riser tube, it creates a warm red glow. A welcome sight in those dim early hours! But beyond its aesthetic appeal, this illumination also serves as an indicator of proper brewing — it’s basically a practical boiling water indicator.

Because of the tank’s integrated design, it does need diligent maintenance. Weekly cleaning and monthly deep cleans with a 50% vinegar mix should do the trick. Also, prompt attention to descaling notifications will keep this beautiful water reservoir performing at its best.

Dual Heating System

Melitta Vision Coffee Maker Dual Heating System

The Melitta Vision’s dual heating system is enough to make you geek the heck out! Similar drip coffee makers use a single heating element for both brewing and warming coffee. But the Vision? It’s got separate heating units for each job!

This may not seem like a big deal, but it is. In previous tests, I’ve found that brewing with dual heaters makes a massive difference in taste. Especially, if you’re like me who comes back for a second (or third) cup.

Once your coffee’s ready, the brewing heater’s auto-shutoff kicks in. This allows the warming heater to take over keep-warm duties. As such, this heating arrangement reduces the chances of burnt coffee — something that haunts drip machines with glass carafes.

Brew Basket

Melitta Vision Coffee Maker Brew Basket

The Melitta Vision’s filter basket design deserves special attention for its thoughtful functionality. Designed for Melitta No. 4 paper filters, it also works well with coffee filters from other brands.

The black plastic basket, positioned strategically above the glass carafe, pays homage to Melitta’s iconic filter shape. For purposes of this Melitta Vision Coffee Maker review, it also delivers practical benefits. By this I mean that it activates the “Brew-Pause” feature whenever needed. What’s more, it’s super-easy to use and clean. Simply lift, empty and rinse to keep it clean between brews.

Glass Carafe

The Melitta Vision’s 12-cup borosilicate glass carafe boasts a refined elegance and practicality. It has a thoughtful design, boasting BPA-free construction, a removable lid and a wide mouth that simplifies cleaning. The stylish glass handle and precision-engineered spout also ensure drip-free pouring. And you know what that means: a clean counter-top every time you brew!

Here’s the thing: The warming plate will keep your brewed coffee toasty for up to two hours. However, I’ve learned through extensive testing on similar machines that coffee’s flavor sweet spot is in the first 30 minutes. Sure, you can hit the Brew button again after auto-shutoff kicks in, but you risk burning your coffee.

So, here’s the deal: If you won’t drink your coffee right away, keep a thermal carafe nearby. Then, transfer coffee into it right after brewing. This way, you’ll preserve your brew’s flavor profile without potentially ruining its taste.

How to Use the Melitta Vision Coffee Maker

If you’re conversant with automatic drip coffee makers, the Melitta Vision Coffee maker should be a breeze. Although I’ve not yet put it through its paces, the Vision seems satisfyingly straightforward to use.

After unboxing, cleaning and priming your machine, you’re ready to brew.

  1. Remove the water reservoir’s glass lid and fill it with fresh cold water. There’s a handy side water level indicator to guide you. If you’re making a full pot, add water just above the 12-cup line to account for any water the coffee grounds absorb.

  2. Drip coffee makers like the Vision shine with a medium grind. Too fine, and you’ll end up with a bitter brew. Also, grind your coffee beans just before brewing for the best flavor.

  3. Next, swing open the hinged brew basket glass lid and pop in a paper filter. Fold it along the seams to help it sit nicely.

  4. Then, add coffee grounds. Now, here’s where it’s easy to make a rookie mistake — don’t eyeball it! 1-3 tablespoons per 8-ounce cup should suffice. Better yet, use a coffee scale to really dial in your brew.

  5. Next, choose your brew settings using the touch control panel, and let the magic happen. Although it isn’t an SCA coffee maker, the Vision should take approximately 8-9 minutes for a full pot. This brew time is right in the sweet spot for proper extraction.

  6. Keep an eye on that little red light; it’ll alert you once brewing’s done. You may also program your brew for later using the “Wake-Timer” setting. There’s nothing as good as waking up to fresh-brewed coffee!

  7. Remember, if you’re brewing a full carafe and can’t wait for the brew to end, feel free to use the Pause-and-Brew feature. It allows you to sneak a cup mid-brew without messing up your counter.

Melitta Vision Cleaning

Cleaning is a non-negotiable for responsible coffee appliance owners. With this Melitta automatic machine, it’s no different. So let’s get into cleaning for this Melitta Vision Coffee Maker review.

Firstly, Melitta states that the carafe and filter basket are dishwasher-safe. However, I wouldn’t stick these parts in the machine daily. And when you do, I’d place them on the top rack to be safe.

After every brew cycle:

  • Empty, wash and rinse the carafe and filter basket to avoid coffee oils setting up camp. Then, recycle the used paper filters and coffee grounds.

  • Using a barely damp cloth, wipe down the warming plate and housing to tackle coffee splashes and fingerprints.

For weekly cleans:

  • Remove and wash the filter basket, carafe and removable glass lid in a soapy water and baking soda mix. For the carafe, use a bottle brush to get right into those corners.

  • Clean the inside surface of the fixed water reservoir and wipe with a clean, dry cloth. Remember to reach its bottom edges where mold and bacteria can accumulate.

  • Clean the hinged glass lid and shower head, too, as those little water holes can get gunky, and even worse, moldy.

You should also incorporate descaling as part of a monthly routine. The user manual gives detailed instructions on these monthly cleaning procedures. Remember, if you live in a hard water area, you might need to descale more often. But with this coffee maker, the descaling indicator should prompt you anyway.
