Why Do People Buy Dual Coffee Makers?

I can think of dozens of reasons why owning a dual coffee maker might come in handy. I guess the keyword here is versatility. The best dual coffee maker allows you to choose between brewing up an entire carafe of black gold or quickly rustling up a single cup of joe.

Heck, there are even models that’ll allow you to experiment with espresso and milk foam.

If you live in a household with multiple coffee drinkers, a dual coffee maker will really shine. Some folks might have to get up early, grab a quick mug of coffee for the road and run out the door. However, later risers might have the good fortune to enjoy a full carafe over the course of the morning.

Either way, the best dual coffee maker will make everyone happy.

Ultimately, a dual coffee maker offers the best of all worlds. If versatility and flexibility in a coffee machine is important to you, this type of brewer is the way to go.

How to Choose the Best Dual Coffee Maker

During your search for the best dual coffee maker it’ll be easy to get overwhelmed. Seriously, there are dozens of models to choose from, all claiming to be the ultimate dream machine!

In an effort to make your life easier, I’ve compiled a list of things to consider before committing to any specific brewer.

Price

As with any purchase, your budget will be one of the most important factors to consider. While it can be tempting to spend more than you should, it’s usually not necessary.

Be careful not to get drawn in by crafty manufacturers trying to convince you that you need all the features under the sun. Instead, keep a level head and stay focused on what it is you want!

Brew Size Options

As I’ve already mentioned, versatility is what makes a dual coffee maker so effective. You should be able to choose between brewing a carafe or a single cup. However, some models allow you to choose between multiple sizes, which can be a real bonus.

Obviously, if you just want simple coffee as either a full carafe or a single serving, all those extras will be unnecessary. That’ll be especially true for a dual coffee and espresso maker.

Size and Design

Depending on the size of your kitchen and the amount of available counter space, you’ll either need to measure carefully or throw caution to the wind! Either way, remember that dual coffee makers can be quite bulky.

Another consideration that’ll be extra important for some folks is the machine’s overall design. Personally, I like a new appliance to look good in my kitchen, so I spend a lot of time considering design options. That said, others don’t care what a drip machine looks like as long as it produces tasty coffee!

Carafe

DeLonghi All in One Glass Carafe.

If you’ll be mainly using your dual coffee maker for its single-serve capabilities, you might not mind a glass carafe. This is the most common type of carafe option and it’ll often keep the price of the machine down. However, it usually includes a keep-warm function, which quickly makes coffee taste like garbage.

So, if you’ll be using the carafe function frequently, I’d suggest looking for a machine with an insulated thermal carafe. Not only will the carafe be more durable, it’ll keep coffee hot for hours without sacrificing flavor.

Programmability

I know that lots of folks like to be able to program your coffee maker to brew coffee at a set time. If that’s the case for you, finding a dual coffee maker with an auto start function shouldn’t be too difficult. Still, I just have to mention that ground coffee loses its delicate aroma the longer it sits in a coffee filter!

Special Features

Manufacturers add tons of extra features to try and make their coffee makers stand out. However, not all extra features will end up being necessary. Still, if you’re serious about coffee, you’ll appreciate having brew strength options and an SCA certification.

Although I’m not a fan, some people appreciate being able to sneak a cup of coffee mid-brew, so a brew pause feature can be handy.

Here are some other special features that may or may not be important to you:

  • Reusable filter

  • LCD screen

  • Water filter

  • Auto shutoff

  • Self cleaning

  • Automatic keep-warm function

CONS

  • Pressurized filter baskets

I’ll admit that I wasn’t expecting much from the DeLonghi All in One before reviewing it. However, having spent time testing the thing I can tell you I was really pleased with how it performs. Heck, I even included it in my guide to the best DeLonghi espresso machines.

Ultimately, if you’re looking for the best dual coffee maker for espresso and drip coffee, the DeLonghi All in One is worth the $289.99 investment.

The drip coffee side has a glass carafe and can be programmed to brew up to 24 hours in advance. Oh, and it’ll produce really tasty coffee too! Ninja Specialty Coffee Maker CM401

The Ninja CM401 Specialty Coffee Maker.

PROS

  • Iced coffee option
  • Multiple brew sizes
  • Look really cool
  • Foldaway frother

CONS

  • Rather expensive
  • Frother doesn’t heat milk

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of the Ninja CM401. And I’m not alone; the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) awarded this machine its coveted Golden Cup certification for exemplary home brewers. So, I think it’s safe to say the Ninja Specialty Coffee Maker is the real deal!

Costing $118.99, this dual coffee maker represents a significant investment. Still, I’m of the opinion that its sheer versatility and performance levels make it worth the cash.

Oh, and the Ninja CM401 looks the part too – this beauty is only going to enhance the vibe of your kitchen!

For starters, the Ninja CM401 offers several brew styles, including Classic, Over Ice and Specialty. Incidentally, that last brew style is extra concentrated and is intended for use in milk-based drinks. You can use the nifty foldaway frother to help out in that regard.

  • Lime green accents
  • Multiple brew sizes
  • ExactBrew system

CONS

  • No thermal carafe

Including the Braun MultiServe Coffee Maker on my list of the best dual coffee makers was a total no-brainer. And not just because it costs an entirely reasonable $189.16.

Another SCA-certified drip coffee maker, the Braun MultiServe is capable of producing outstanding coffee. Even better, you can choose from seven brew size options, ranging from a single cup to a full carafe. Add in the fact that the MultiServe is really well made and looks great and you know you’re onto a winner!

  • Compact design
  • Great user interface
  • Extremely versatile

CONS

  • Too much plastic

Costing $134.99, the is a nifty little dual coffee maker that definitely earned its place on this list.

For starters, I really like the way this coffee machine looks. What’s more, the manufacturer has designed the user interface to be as intuitive as possible. There’s a large digital display as well as clearly labeled buttons for selecting carafe and cup size, brew strength and for brewing.

Incidentally, there are also buttons for programming the delay start function. Want to wake up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee? Hamilton Beach has you covered.

Decision Time

At the end of the day, only you can decide what’s the best dual coffee maker for your needs. Still, as we’ve seen, there are tons of awesome options out there.

Whether you end up going with a basic model or a fancy drip coffee and espresso combo, a dual coffee maker is only going to make your life better. One thing is for certain: you can’t go wrong with any of the options on my list!

What’s your favorite dual coffee maker? Is it on my list? I look forward to reading about it in the comments section!

Best Dual Coffee Maker FAQ

Dual coffee makers are able to produce full carafes of coffee as well as single servings of drip coffee or espresso.

While all the dual coffee makers on my list can produce piping hot coffee, I found that the DeLonghi All in One made coffee a little hotter than most.

There are plenty of ways to get stains out of a glass carafe. Perhaps the most effective method is to use a little salt, lemon juice and crushed ice. Stir the mixture, rinse with cold water then use a scrubby on stubborn residue.

You should clean all removable parts at the end of each day’s use. Once a month, or so, consider descaling your dual coffee maker with a mix of water and white vinegar.

Not only will instant coffee produce bad results, it could damage your dual coffee maker. Instead, use freshly ground coffee from high-quality beans.
